Problem with DFU mode

I can't get my phone into DFU mode, I've tried it over and over again, it's at the emergency call screen. When I connect to itunes it says I need to insert a sim, I don't have an AT&T sim card, I wanted to unlock it to use my own sim card. At this point I'd just be happy to get it off the emergency call screen and use it as a ipod touch. Can any one help?

When the iphone is off, connected to usb, I press the home/power buttons simultaneously, the apple logo appears after 1-2 seconds. From what I've read it should be black for the 10 seconds that I'm supposed to hold.

Still can't get into DFU mode, what about ziphone, any advice in using it in combination with the quickpwn, or just using it to get to DFU mode? I just downloaded ziphone-win3.0. I have a 2g on 2.2.1.

OK - I'll take that advice. But is there possible software that would put my phone into DFU mode? My phone is stuck on the emergency phone screen. I did a restore to the 2.2.1 ipsw, but maybe because it was never in DFU mode that was my problem? I don't know anymore what the original firmware was on the phone. Would it hurt my phone to restore 2.1? I would love to at least get my icons back.

I can't do a DFU restore from itunes, because I never get the blank DFU screen, and I can't get through quickpwn because it won't get to DFU, so I'm so, so stuck, I'll take any advice I ca:failn get at this point!!
