    Default iPhone 2G 1.1.4 ( 3.9 FB ) upgrade to 2.1

I had an OTB 1.1.4 16 GB 2G iPhone. I had unlocked it using iPlus which downgrades the 4.6 bootloader to 3.9 FB (fakeblank).

I have the following setup :

WinXP / Windows Vista machines, iTunes 8.0

    I have a few questions :

    1. I want to upgrade to 2.1. Will the QuickPwn 2.1 Jailbreak, Activate and Unlock my iPhone. I am using it on an network in India.
    2. Using itunes to restore from the 2.1 firmware available from the Apple website wont mess up the phone, given the fact that I have 3.9 FB bootloader.

My apologies if this has been mentioned anywhere else. But the fact is that there is so much information on this forum that it leaves an novoice like me confused.

    Thanks in advance

OK, here is what i would do. Restore the iPhone to Apple firmware 2.1 in iTunes first. Will be locked then. Get Quickpwn for Windows, start the programm and during the process UNCHECK the option to "Unlock phone". You will end with a jailbroken/activated iPhone that is not unlocked.
Start Cydia then and install Bootneuter. Set Auto-Lock to never - very important. Start Bootneuter then and set Bootloader 4.6, Neuter=ON, Fakeblank=OFF, Unlock=ON. Hit flash then. Bootneuter will make you reboot the iPhone and start Bootneuter again. do it. Apply the settings above again and hit flash. During the process that will take a couple minutes do never ever touch the iphone, let Bootneuter do its job.
At the end you will have back the correct bootloader & the iPhone will be unlcoked. To make sure not to start Bootneuter by accident and risk a brick, use Cydia to delete Bootneuter.

Thanks for your prompt response. I found this tuitorial on the web : http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1880

Step Thirteen says that it would run bootneuter. Do I still need to run this manually. How is it different from the QuickPwn running bootneuter automatically..

To be fairly honest I am a bit skeptical running bootneuter from Cydia.

It's the same programm. the only difference is running the fully automated process described at iClarified it will leave you with bootloader 3.9. Thats ok, donT get me wrong. Just in case you want the one the iPhone came with, you'd have ti install bootneuter after the complete process againg and change it.
If you choose unlock phone in Quickpwn (Windows) bootneuter gets executed and automatically, you dont have to hit the buttons, thats the main difference.
The only important hing if you do it manually is to set auto-lock to never before running bootneuter and not interrupt the process.

As I said, you can use the tutorial at iClarified, the iPhone will be unlocked after - with bootloader 3.9, but thats no problem.

Is there any known advantage of having 4.6 BL over 3.9 ? I am sure Apple would have done it with a purpose but just thought I would ask..

If you ever have to return the iPhone for repair, you'd better have the bootloader on it the iPhone had OOTB, so leaving no traces of hacking.

Besides this I dont know of any backdrops having BL3.9. There are some reports that BL4.6 on phones that came with it improves batterie usage, but I cant confirm that at all. As I said, you can stay with 3.9 and wont face any problems.

You can just hit "restore" in iTunes (not update), then iTunes will download the Apple FW 2.1 and do the job. or you download it before to your PC, then shift-click restore and point iTunes to the downloaded firmware - same result.

I always use the shift-restore cause if Apple provides an update to firmware 2.2 the moment you just hit restore (without manual selecting), this one will be installed and you get stuck with a locked iPhone until a new Pwnage version is out ;-)

How easy / difficult would it be to move to the 4.6 BL at a later point in time ?? Does this tool not give any option to select the bootloader version before running QuickPwn / bootneuter?

Is it not advisable to restore a backup ( taken from 1.1.4) to a 2.1 version phone ?

See the procedure above. Use Cydia to install Bootneuter on the iPhone, then flash it with the settings Bootloader=4.6, Neuter=ON, Fakeblank=OFF, Unlock=ON.
One word on Cydia/Bootneuter. Bootneuter is from the Dev-Team, the same version that is used when you use Quaickpwn's Unlock feature. Cydia is the software to download the tool if you go for it manually.

I would not restore from backup, lots of users experience problems afterwards. You would get back lots of settings you want to have but preferences aswell of apps and other stuff that is outdated at 2.1 and will probably interfere.

What you could do on you iPhone at 1.1.4 (OpenSSH has be be installed) is SFTP into the iPhone (with winSCP), goto
    /private/var/mobile/Library
Inside you'll find several directories like CallHistory, SMS,... Open them and copy the .bd and .sqlite, ... files to your PC. later once at 2.1 install openSSH via Cydia, SFTP into the iPhone and put em back. this way you preserve the settings you wanna keep.

    hope this helps

One more: If you want to use Bootneuter later, goto

and just do steps 1-9. I know it is for Mac but the Bootneuter steps are the same
