Default Help request with QuickPWN and Itunes restore process!!

    Here's the scenario:

"2G" iPhone with 2.0 in it.

I Pwned it from 1.1.4 and except for the fact it was slow as hell, iPhone worked fine.

Then I decide to go for 2.1

I dl 2.1 and Pwner for Mac. I first restore using ITunes 8, which rendered an unusable iPhone that was sitting in the dock, with apple logo, "loading" animation" and vibrating every 10 seconds or so. However iTunes was able to see it as synch was taking place before iPhone reboots itself every 5 minutes or so...

Then I decide to try Pwnage to get it back. Frustratingly enough, iTunes refuses to use the ipsw created with Pwnage (Unknown Error (6) reported by iTunes).

Then I decide to try QuickPWN. Voila! It works! It renders a fully jailbroken AND activated, unlocked iPhone. Read again: unlocked.

    So cool.

I run iTunes to have all my data back... and oh well! When it finishes, it gets back to state numer 1, aka, sitting on the dock with apple logo, "loading" animation, vibrating every 10 seconds and itunes trying to synch it.

If I try to QuickPWN it again, it succeeds but I get the same status iphone (apple logo, vibration...)

I have to RESTORE using iTunes and then QuickPWN it to have it back, BUT I CANNOT RESTORE MY DATA STORED IN ITUNES!

    WHy!?!?

My suspect: i was using 5 icon dock modification and since itunes backups logo positions (i might be wrong?!) it is possible that some plists got corrupted or unusuable?

The fact is that itunes sees the iphone and tries to restore information onto it, but since iphone keeps vibrating for xxx and then reboots, restore never takes place in full...

    Ideas? Suggestions?

To summarize: I'm able to get a fresh 2.1 install working. I can even QuickPWN it and get a fully working iPhone, but every time I try to restore my old data, i get a brick.

Where does iTunes store the backup files on a mac? I'd like to try and extract information from there so it does not get lost!

    Please help!

    Thanks!!!

Set it as a new iPhone. Don't push your luck...

what you seem to have done is set up phone from back up??? correct me if im wrong
when u backed up u were on 1.1.4, so when u set up ur phone from 1.1.4 backup it breaks a 2.x.x

    SOLUTION
RESTORE and quickpwn, then set up phone as new......

REMEMBER SET UP PHONE AS NEW AND NOT FROM OLD BACK UP
MacBook Pro OS X SNOW Leopard
    iPhone 4 16GB iOS 4.2
    iPad WiFi 64GB iOS 4.2
    BlackBerry Curve 3G (9300)

    Thanks!!!
set it up as a new iPhone.

Them - lucky you are on a Mac - get mdhelper here
    http://ericasadun.com/ftp/Macintosh/...-universal.zip

unzip it to your desktop, should read then mdhelper. Start Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities)

Type once (for setting correct permissions)
    cd Desktop
    chmod 755 mdhelper

Then for getting the content of the backup files, type

    ./mdhelper -C .*

You will find a new folder on the desktop containig lots of files, pics and db's from your backup. The backup is sitting in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup by the way. mdhelper will extract the files from the semi-encrypted backup format.

At least files like sms.db, notes.db ... can be SSH'd bach to your upgraded iPhone.

always setup as a new iphoen to avoid problems!

Thank you all for all your respones.

No, i was not on 1.1.4, I was on 2.0, but I will set it up as NEW iphone then use mhelper!

However when using mhelper, i find out it extracts up to THREE different backups onto the same folder.

Is there a way to avoid this?

EDIT: I temp moved out the rest of backups a level up from the backup dir and i think that will do it.

Correct, thats a way to do it.
iTunes sets up a backup folder for every iPhone you have. Sometimes (I dont know why) even a new one just for one iPhone.

If I were you, once you got all the data back on your iPhone at 2.1 after using mdhelper, I would delete all of the old backups, even if another new one is created.
On the next sync iTunes will then setup a fresh one for your iPhone.

How do you know where does every file get into the iphone? mdhelper extracts all the files without paths nor folders! Sometimes, for certain games for example, its hard to guess where the profiles are stored and / or if i'll import them correctly.

I also use to have just one camera roll, and it creates several similar names that Mac renames to image 2, image 2 2 etc

Is there yet another trick or list of files to replace to have the backup that you extract "reinserted" on the brand new iphone?

yet another issue i had with 2.0 is that CAMERA took AGES literally to open, and when shooting, took AGES to save the image on "disk".

I set up a 2.01 with 1Gb of boot partition on a friends iphone, thinking boot partition is used for cache, swapdisks or whatever, and camera was perfect.

However on my iphone upgraded to 2.1, camera is slow as hell again.

    WHY!?

(SINCE i used QuickPwn i couldnt define the boot partition to be of 1Gb on mine )

sorry, I dont know of a way to find that out. We are luckky to have the solution to get the files back at all.
On the camera roll, just open the extracted photos in any graphic software on your Mac/PC and check which one you want to keep. Copy them into the graphics application that iTunes syncs with and you have them back in an album on the iPhone.
