    Default Confusion about pwning

Last time I updated my phone, I used WinPWN to jb/unlock it. That was on firmware 2.0.2. Just now I clicked update in iTunes instead of restore to update my phone to 2.2 and it just finished and for some reason it's still unlocked even though I didn't use quickpwn on the new firmware. I still need to jailbreak it, but how can it be unlocked before I quickpwn it?

Also just noticed that if I go to Settings > General >, the carrier is listed as AT&T 2.9. I happen to be using an 8 year old AT&T SIM card, but the iPhone never accepted it as an AT&T SIM before and I always had to unlock it. What's going on?

I think you are a little confused. Just restore to FW 2.2 then quick pwn. I would uncheck the unlock since you are already on AT&T.

No, I am not even remotely confused. I won't restore the firmware as I want to retain all my data on the phone. Hence, the update instead, and the whole point of using quickpwn instead of pwnage. Also, unchecking the unlock is not a smart idea. As I said in my original post, it's an 8 year old AT&T SIM. They are not the same as the current AT&T SIMs and will not work in an iPhone without unlocking it.

What I want to know is, why is my phone still unlocked after I updated the firmware, even though i haven't quickpwned it yet?

If the iPhone is a 2G one, there is no baseband update from 2.0.2 to 2.2, so the phone remains unlocked. That's all

Check this thread: (2G) After update to 2.1 in Itunes it is unlocked

Thank you. That's the answer I was looking for. Figured it was the baseband, but just wanted to be sure.

You know they will normally replace sim cards. Cellone did for free, I'm not sure AT&T does for free, but I know if not its relatively cheap. From what I've learned its sometimes a good idea, the older sims have issues picking up newer towers, which was my issue at one point. May be worth looking into.
