Default [1.1.2 otb] Thinking and upgrading to 2.1 and need help

    Hey guys,

I currently have an unlocked and Jailbroken iphone 2g which I used g-unlock to do. And my modem firmware is 4.02.13. Now my questions are what are the advantages to using quickpwn or winpwn? Do you guys suggest one over the other for a first time user? Also if I decide to using qucikpwn to go to 2.1 can I just follow the iclarified tutorial and I will have a 2.1 unlocked, jailbroken and activated phone? And do I need to start of by restoring to Apple's 2.1 which would leave me with a locked phone? Or can I just start from 1.1.2? And I have also heard about people haveing problems when updating like getting errors before or after the update? Is this common in the procedure?

Now on to my second set of questions. My phone currently has a lot of pictures on it and videos from videorecorder and audio saved from the audio recorder etc... And I know you guys have said not to restore to a backup from itunes. So how would I go about keeping this data and then putting it back on? And finally are you guys enjoying Apple's 2.1 firmware and think its worth going to becuase I know once once I update I am going to be loosing about 7 pages of third party apps?

Sorry guys for all these questions it just that I have been waiting a long time to update and have been a little worried about it.

    Hey...
    Don't worry. It's very easy.
I started off like you with a 1.1.2 OOTB and I gradually went my way up to new firmwares.
Because you're updating to 2.x, an update or a restore are basically the same. Your iPhone will be basically restored and everything will be deleted.
So what you could do, and that is the easiest thing to do. If you haven't downloaded the apple 2.1 firmware yet, go to thepiratebay.org and search for iPhone 2.1
    you get torrents.
Check the one that's has Pwnage clean in its title and download it using limewire or anything else.
I can't post the link here seeing they would edit it and remove it coz ur not allowed to post customized firmwares.
So, when u finish downloading that custom firmware, back up your phone one last time and restore to the custom firmware (without DFU, without anything) just shift + restore.

Now, if you downloaded Apple's 2.1. Just restore to it and use quickpwn (the new version) to unlock and activate and jailbreak your phone.
Yes, the iClarified tutorial is correct (obviously) and if you follow it step by step, you won't find it hard to get to 2.1.

The errors you heard about are from people trying to restore to a custom firmware in DFU. It seems that in iTunes 8.0, you don't need DFU or any special state for the phone to restore to custom firmwares.
Hope I was of help and if you want the link, msg me or something.

Thanks I really appreciate all the info you have given me. But I still have 4 questions. If I get the Pwnage clean file, do I update my Itunes to 8.0 and just restore right from 1.1.2. ? And if I do it that way I can let itunes put the backup on my phone?

And if I decide to use quickpwn I see Iclarfieds tutorial says
"Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone." Does that mean I take my 1.1.2 phone and update offically from Itunes or I use the file iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw?

And also if I use quickpwn I assume I can't load the backup and I have to set up as a new phone? If so what would happen if I loaded the backup?

And sorry again for posting all these questions.

    Sorry for the late reply!!
But yeah, you update to 8.0 and you sync the phone one last time and then u shift+restore to the custom firmware.

If you use quickpwn, sync the iPhone with iTunes 8.0, restore to the apple firmware (not the custom one) and use quickpwn to unlock and jailbreak.
Now when u finish using quickpwn, you get the option to set a new phone or restore from backup. Yes, you can restore from backup. You don't have to set up a new phone and lose everything

PS: about the wasted space question. If you update or restore from 1.1.2, it's the same thing. And the official update from iTunes is the same as the filename you mentioned. So it won't make any difference.
If you already downloaded the apple official firmware (iPhone 1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw) then just click shift+update OR shit+Restore and choose it.
And then use quickpwn (newest version from dev team) to unlock and jailbreak and activate.

What I think you should do and is much easier, go with the custom firmware. You just restore and the iPhone does all the work.
Then, you choose to restore from backup and nothing is lost... very easy.

Hey, sorry to ask so many questions. I just have a couple more questions and I think that will be all. With using the custom firmware I have heard your itunes or the phone has to have been previously pwned. Is that true? Also do I have to put my iphone in DFU mode or restore mode before using it? And with quickpwn I have heard many people saying they get a "Wrong sim detected" error. Do you know how likely that is happening or why that is happening? And also if I decide to use quickpwn and restore to a fresh 2.1 in itunes does my phone need to be in DFU or restore mode or I just shift + click restore and it will work?

The answer to the custom related question is no. You don't need DFU and u don't need a previously pwned iPhone.

As to quickpwn, the sim thing didn't happen to me. Nor did it happen to my friends, who are technologically challenged, and whom I helped get their iPhone from 1.1.4 and 1.1.1 unpwned to 2.1.
And no, you don't need DFU.

thanks for all your help elie.fares. I decided to go with the quickpwn method becuase there were a lot of video tutorials etc.. The program worked great except I did get an error 9 in itunes tired to restore to 2.1 and I had to restore again. And I also got a usb error in quickpwn during the jailbreak, however it still worked. But thanks again for all your help I am now on 2.1 and enjoying.

But I have one more question for you when I used cydia it gave me a list of 5 recomened things to install. Do you know if a need/should install them?

    I guess you should.
I don't really like having Cydia and installer and find them useless.
But when I had them, I updated everything.

Is it possible to upgrade WITHOUT the restore? I wouldn't like to re-install everything, and back everything up... Say I have a custom firmware, and I click shtift+update @ itunes. Makes sense or not?
