Default Would custom FW fix my phone & 1015 error?

3GS with 4.2.1 that was previously jailbroken when I purchased it.

Its stuck in recovery mode due to rebooting (dead battery).

Tried to recover it via itunes but got 1015 error.

After research, I assume the previous owner used a ipad baseband and jailbroke it as well as unlocked it.

I tried Blackra1n, redsn0w, Tiny Umbrella and none of them worked.

I tried to download a customized ipsw file but itunes wont recognize it saying it is not compatible as well as redsnow ect.

Can anyone help me get the phone to function again? Maybe a custom ipsw that will actually get this unit to boot?

I dont care about the data. I just want to get it out of recovery mode. TU didnt kick it out of the mode.

I cant downgrade, upgrade or do anything.. Should I stop wasting my time or is there something I am missing.. Been searching and nothing seems to work.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Update:

I got the phone into DFU mode, tried to "boot tethered" with redsn0w and nothing..

Tried DFU again and update via itunes.. Got Error code 1600 once, 21 the next and 1015 each separate attempts.

    Blackra1n - didnt work
    Redsn0w - didnt work
Tiny Umbrella - wont kick it out of recovery mode

It looks like I was able to (dont ask me how because I dont know) downgrade to 4.1 I know this because redsnow's corresponding ipsw file is 4.1 i downloaded and used to try to reboot once. 4.2 no longer is recognized

You have not said if you have a new or old bootrom 3GS.

New bootrom 3GS simply cannot use custom IPSW (except iOS 4.1 - with SHSH for iOS 4.1)

you most likely have NOT downgraded to iOS 4.1 - what you have prpobably done is sent a patched 4.1 kernel to try and boot a 4.2.1 iOS phone. This won't work.

The reason 4.2.1 is no longer recognised is either because you are (incorrectly) trying to use a custom 4.2.1 IPSW (redsn0w only accepts stock IPSW) or you are have somehow suddenly started using a different/older version of redsn0w.

Thank you for the prompt replies! Is there anyway to downgrade even though the phone is stuck in this mode?

I do not know which bootrom it has. All I know that it had ios 4.2.1 and was tethered - jailbroken and unlocked for tmobile.. (I use AT&T)

After searching for options, It looks like this is a common problem with the 3GS running 4.2.1 jailbroken.

The phone is currently in DFU Mode (Black screen as if it is shut off) I am not going to touch it anymore until I find another solution worth trying.

I have no problems getting into and out of DFU Mode since I got the correct timing.

Seems like I am missing the shsh and that is why the phone will not reboot or exit recovery mode.

Blackra1n does not support tethered jailbroken phones. Tiny Umbrella is not kicking it out of recovery mode and the log says that the shsh file is missing.

I wonder if I can convert any ipsw file into a bundle and save as a .tar file so I can use redsnow to install it..

I hope the previous owner used cydia's make my life easier feature and backed it up before he sold it to me... Yet to find out..

Cant wait for the untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 to be released... It will make life easier for me

This is a common problem with unlocking - those that have updated their baseband to 6.15 are limited in how they can restore.

    See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm for details

Missing SHSH is not what causes you to be unable to reboot or exit recovery mode.

The cause of this is either 6.15 baseband (cannot restore stock IPSW) or simply the tethered jailbreak on 4.2.1 (and with all your attempts to fix it you have a mis-matched files from iOS 4.2.1 and 4.1 in your kernelcache/rootfs/NOR)

Forget blackra1n, apple patched that exploit in iOS 3.1.13 - you need an iBoot from 3.1.2 or 3.1 in your NOR to use blackra1n exploit.

Plus iOS 4.2.1 requires a special kernel patch (when jailbroken) - this is not part of blackra1n.

To summarise, blackra1n only works if your entire iPhone is running 3.1.2 or 3.1 (rootfs/kernel/NOR)

TinyUmbrella (and other similar techniques) can only exit recovery mode when the only thing keeping you in recovery mode is that the ramdisk restore script failed to set the auto-boot parameter again. This is one of the last steps the ramdisk restore process should do.

This is a ridiculous idea. It shows you have zero understanding of the security model of the iPhone boot/restore process. Spend your time reading up on how this all works instead.

TinyUmbrella can tell you this very quickly - you may need to create a manual entry for your iPhone though - all you need is your ECID (and DFU mode gives you that if you look at phone's USB details)

Took it back and left it there for 2 hours. Got it back working,
    running 4.2.1 (8c148a)

    model mc136ll

    modem firmware 06.15.00

    ------------
Installed SAM to resolve following issues

It seemed like the battery was heating up even though it was in sleep mode, so I disabled summer mode in the winterboard app and took off a theme I was using. It was still a little warm but not as much as it was previously.

Calls were dropping alot (less then a min per call) and the 3G Network & Signal was pretty weak when I tried to use safari or cydia without wifi.

Took it back where? To who?

Did it resolve either of these issues? I'm keen to hear feedback (good and bad)

Also, installing SAM is not enough, you need to remove hacktivation/deactivate/reactivate
