Default Deleting watchdog will cause problems I think

robobob4 - I'm pretty sure what you did will cause more problems than it solves. In the original post, mandrake said that the watchdog is necessary not just for respringing, but also to check the entire system as well. If you delete it, your phone will auto-reboot every 10 minutes whether you're in a looped reboot or not. The phone can't function without the watchdog, as far as I can tell. So, you need to copy it back onto your phone, then do the workaround described in mandrake's original post.

I'm still curious about the status of a fix for this problem (rather than the stop-gap workaround). If anyone has any information about this, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

Found the following in Apple's support forum from user Richard2478. Haven't tried it yet but if it works, it's a much easier fix until the permanent fix comes around:

I ran across the following fix from http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...-recovery-mode. I haven't tried it myself but it's definitely worth a try comparing to spending hours on restoring, which I have done twice so far:

    Darwinian Dude
Many people have experienced this on the Apple forums with 2.0, 2.0.1 hasn't fixed it. I've got lots of apps, and i've restored 5 times since July 11th, and my backup only worked once. But, Mr Buzz posted the following. I'm yet to try this as it hasn't happened again, but it seems to be a way to save your data and make it boot up when frozen on the apple logo and others have reported that this works.

15-MIN SOLUTION: CONNECT TO ITUNES AND REBOOT 3 TIMES TO AVOID RESTORE
So this has happened to me more times than i can count, and I've recovered both my phones (2G + 3G) using this method. I've seen some people in this thread allude to this solution but let me just spell it out completely and hopefully this will save you a few restores on your phone.

    1. Connect to iTunes via USB. Do not disconnect for rest of these steps. iTunes may appear frozen or stuck with spinning beachball....this is okay, do not Force Quit iTunes. I tried a few times w/o it being connected to iTunes and it doesn't work.
    2. Once connected, hold Home + Power until screen blinks then Apple logo comes back up.
    3. Wait until Apple logo dims slightly (~5 minutes or less). Do NOT reboot until the apple logo dims.
    4. Hold Home + Power again until it reboots and Apple logo comes back up.
    5. After 2 min or so, the phone may vibrate once or twice. Continue waiting for the full 5 min until Apple logo dims slightly. iTunes at this stage MAY recognize the phone...do not sync or do anything in iTunes.
    6. Hold Home + Power for the 3rd time until it reboots. Phone may vibrate again after 2 minutes or so. Eventually you'll break into your Home screen.
Hope that helps and let me know if it does.

Apparently what causes this endless loop is that the SpringBoard crashes upon launch (over and over again) and launches CrashReporter on the phone itself. It goes into an endless loop until somehow iTunes while connected via USB triggers some sort of fix on the SpringBoard or its preferences/database.

moving it is the same as deleting it. Both instances it cant run. I saved it to my PC for a reason, so I could put it back IF it worked.

Yes it did give me 10 minutes intead of 2 but It still did not fix the problem. I just had to restore my phone, jailbreak it, and put in my contacts via diskaid.

And its practically a fresh phone now with my itunes apps, my contacts, my ringtones and my calendar.

    Default Ahhh

I see what you mean. If you take it out altogether you'll get ten minutes instead of just two. Not a bad idea. Then you do the "surgery" as usual, and put it back once it works. Clever. I still think the way described above is better, that is if it works. I've heard numerous people have tried it, and they all said it worked without a problem. One guy even said he tried it on a computer without iTunes and it still worked.

    Hi Everyone,

I thought I would mention that for me anyway, 2.1 DOES fix this issue - and completely.

I've had no crashes whatsoever on 2.1 for the 2 weeks I've been running it in fact, and I now have ALL the apps installed at once (6 pages worth) on the device without issues, backup time is fast, apps can be installed/updated/removed either via itunes or locally without issue, and I've had no stuck on the apple logo issues.

However, I was unable to do an "update" to 2.1 from 2.0.2 - after the update Springboard was crashing and restarting forever, as seen by looking at the system log with the iphone configuration utility.

However after a full restore and not using a recent (2.0) backup, everything is fine.

I haven't tried to jailbreak it yet, but will be shortly.

I keep getting this, even with 2.1.

Any help for a permanent fix?

Did you do a fresh firmware restore ? (Not upgrade)

Also after doing the restore, don't restore a previous configuration backup when prompted, make sure you choose to set up the ipod/iphone as a new device and manually configure it.

Any time I tried to restore a configuration backup that was taken from 2.0.2 I would end up with the device stuck in a reboot loop, but since setting it up fresh it has been fine, no problems like this at all in weeks of heavy use with 50+ apps installed.

    Hello I have a 1 week old 3g 16gig & I am having this exact same problem .
I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1 & my phone has ben stuck on the apple screen
ever since . I have tried to restore atleast 50x's & it still remains stuck on
the apple logo. I did try this method & unfortunately it did noit work for me .
Is there anything else I can do beside renameing or deleteing the mobile
watch dog folder ? I see that it has something to do with the sprinboard .
so I was wondering if i should try & also rename that ?

THANKS for any help or suggestions .

2.1 most definitely does not solve the problem, at least not if you jailbreak your phone. After the last time my jailbroken 3G froze on me, I tried the mobilewatchdog fix. This resulted in my phone being stuck in the hardware reboot every 10 minutes.

That was several weeks ago. I've decided for the time being to put my phone back in its little jail cell. I've had about enough of this problem. I've had to restore my phone several times as a result of it, wasting valuable time. I've also been reduced to very few apps on the phone, because I'm wary of having the issue come up again (besides which, without Categories, having lots of apps becomes unwieldy).

Can someone please update me on the status of a permanent fix? I can't deal with this temporary workaround. If Apple can't get their act together and fix this problem, surely someone in the jailbreak community can step up to the plate. Is anyone working on this?

Yes. I restored to 2.1, pwned it, then set it up as a new phone, but it still does it.
