Using someone else's custom .ipsw??
I don't have a mac and therefore can't use Pwnage Tool. I want to upgrade to 2.2 without upgrading my baseband (still running the original 2.01).
Can I just take an ipsw that someone else created with Pwnage Tool and apply to my phone using iTunes? Or is the ipsw made specifically for one phone?
Otherwise what are my options, if any? I have absolutely no access to a Mac, I don't even know anyone that owns one. I guess I could emulate Mac OSX, but then who knows if the USB control will be stable enough. Don't wanna risk screwing up the phone due to communication error or something.

You can re-use any premade custom software. just make sure to get what you want (in your case without baseband update)
One more thing: no links here to custom firmware files, we dont allow it. Google is your friend.

CAREFULL !!!!.
If you have an iphone 3G, taking a pre-made custom firmware 2.2 is NOT good.
If that custom firmware does not have the right option NOT to update baseband then you can be screwed for good.
If you are going this route, please make sure you know what you are looking for.
Good luck

I agree you should be careful and check what went into the custom firmware you intend to use.
It is my understanding also that the current pawnage tool that is being used to create custom firmware for 2.2 has the update baseband option greyed out.

Thats correct, when selecting 3G iPhone in PwnageTool the option is greyed out, no baseband update. BUT: as dtube stated, using a custom firmware file from soemone else always is risky. You could get one that is made for 2G iPhones or even worse someone using Xpwn to edit the greyed out option and provide you with a custom firmware file that upgrades your baseband.
The OP asked if it is possible. Yes it is. i do it all the time on my different iPhones. But I produced the custom firmware files so i know whats in there. I'd never use one from a torrent - never.
What the Op could do is asking a friend if he could use his Mac, produce a custom firmware file without baseband upgrade and copy/use this one on his Win PC.
just my 2 cent
