[SOLVED]Updating from 2.1 to 2.2
I've succesfully updated my iPhone firmware from 2.1 to 2.2, only to realize yellowsn0w did not work. I soon found out that my baseband version is "02.11.07", which is from 2.1.
When I tried making another .ipsw from PwnageTool, I noticed the "Enable Baseband Update" is disabled and greyed out. I can't update to 2.2 from iTunes due to 2.2.1 released, so is there anyway that I can update to 2.2 while enabling the baseband update or can I update the baseband seperately?
tl;dr: How to update to 2.2's baseband?
Also, im using a dual boot system with OSX86 and Vista.
Help much appreciated.

You could shift-restore in iTunes 8 to Apple standard firmware 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1!!!!) first, this would give your iPhone the correct baseband.
Then use PwnageTool 2.2.5 to create a custom firmware 2.2.1 and apply it.
Explanation: PwnageTool leaves the baseband as it is for 3G to make sure you have the baseband you want.
AGAIN: restore to firmware 2.2 NOT 2.2.1 first! If you restore to firmware 2.2.1 you are STUCK - NO YELLOWSN0W!!!!!
Download Apple Firmware 2.2 first to your PC, links are here, make sure to get the correct one.

I seem to be in a similar boat but I'm on a Mac:
iMac G5 2GHz(Power Pc)
OS X 10.5.6
iphone 3G running 2.1 with 2.11.07 baseband
T-mobile USA
I've hesitated to jailbreak and unlock because my Universal SIM was working well. It's days are over I'm afraid. Now I'm finding I can't download some apps because I'm not current with 2.2. I've been combing the net for days trying to confirm the best way to update the baseband to 2.28 AND update to 2.2.1. Please consider me a highly motivated newbie. I've reviewed the videos for jailbreak and unlock at iclarified and read the dev blog post listing cautions. Help on the following would be much appreciated:
1. Please advise as to least error prone way to update baseband from 2.11.07 to 2.28 AND update 2.1 to 2.2.1 with intention to jailbreak and unlock. I have the latest Pwnage tool
(2.2.5) and iphone 1,2_2.2.1_5h11_Restore.ipsw in a single folder.
2. I realize there is a DFU mode access problem with some Macs (unibody) but do not know if this will be an issue for my older imac G5 (Power PC). I have a powered USB hub that I can use as an intermediary when hooking the phone to the imac which apparently works by most reports. I'm afraid to mess around with script modification (the method listed on the dev web blog) because I might irretrievably mess up my system.
3. Should I use the same method that was listed above for the PC user? Any special instructions or links to Mac-specific software or firmware that I don't already have or that would simplify my update?
Thanks in advance for any instructions you can provide. I realize it would have been a lot easier if I had quickpwned a few weeks ago. I really don't want to brick this phone if at all possible.

1. Read my post #2 in this thread
2. Try to get the iPhopne in DFU mode with the external hub or check
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f146/60657.htm
Just make sure to follow the instructions or you might find yourself beeing stucked.
3. PwnageTool 2.2.5 is Mac-only...

[QUOTE=volkspost;386600]You could shift-restore in iTunes 8 to Apple standard firmware 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1!!!!) first, this would give your iPhone the correct baseband.
Please clarify, is this a shift-restore using itunes and nothing else or do I download the 2.2 ipsw and use pwnage? I'll be connected via a USB hub.
Then use PwnageTool 2.2.5 to create a custom firmware 2.2.1 and apply it.
I then download the 2.2.1 ipsw from the link you provided above, place the ipsw in the pwnage folder, and then use the pwnage tool to make a custom firmware that updates me to 2.2.1 but maintains the 2.28 baseband correct?
Explanation: PwnageTool leaves the baseband as it is for 3G to make sure you
P.S. Can you recommend a video tutorial that will step me through it? Is the iclarified video accurate?
Thanks-nano

Goto
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f127/22056.htm
and download the 3G firmware file 2.2. Open iTunes 8.0.2, connect your iPhone 3G and hit shift-restore (Windows) or option-restore (Mac). A dialog will show up. Select the 2.2 firmware file you downloaded. You will end with a locked 2.2 iPhone at the correct baseband.
As described in the iClarified tutorial I mentioned, create a custom firmware 2.2.1 with PwnageTool 2.2.5. Follow the tutorial.
Read the iClarified tutorial, it is pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the "Mac" clarification (option-restore), it's the little things...
Can this all be done with the T-mobile SIM card installed? If so I won't have a carrier signal if this matters (obviously the Universal SIM will be removed prior to any updating).

Thanks Volks....I understand the steps and finally have the stones to try it. I've searched the forums but can't find whether or not I should leave the T-Mobile SIM in the phone for the duration while using itunes to restore to 2.2, then making the custom 2.2.1, and then unlocking. Does it matter if it's in or out? Thanks- nano
