I've searched the forums but can't find whether or not I should leave the T-Mobile SIM in the phone for the duration while using itunes to restore to 2.2, then making the custom 2.2.1, and then unlocking. Does it matter if it's in or out? Thanks- nano
Just leave your T-Mob simcard in the iPhone - you'll be fine.

Well...I restored to 2.2 through iTunes. I then used Pwnage to make a custom firmware ( 2.2.1) maintaining the 2/28 baseband. Everything went fine until I tried to restore with the custom firmware. I keep getting (21) and (1600) errors. I've read your other notes and am pretty sure I'm in DFU mode ( black screen) when it asks for the restore but I keep getting the errors right after it extracts the software. I'm probably bouncing between restore and DFU modes. I'm using the USB hub which worked fine for the first steps. I've tried connecting directly to my G5 imac with the same result. Suggestions? I'm dead in the water. Thanks- nano

    Success!

I think fixing these 21 and 1600 (restore and DFU errors) when attempting to restore the custom firmware can be resolved fairly easily. After reading all the convoluted posts at many sites regarding this problem, I discovered a few things. Using a different computer (laptop) with a virgin itunes and the same custom firmware resulted in the same errors. I finally decided to start over and reload the stock 2.2 soft/firmware. I then used pwnage to make a second custom firmware and then made sure I was in DFU mode (black screen). If you don't get a progress bar on the iphone screen under the apple logo you're not in the proper mode. What should have taken 15 minutes took 6 hours but I'm up and running!

Thanks again Volks for your patience and instruction without which I would have been screwed. If you ever have time, you should assemble your prior posts into a folder and save thousands the time and agony of exploring the other useless half-baked approaches that litter the net. Again thank you!

Glad it worked for you - finally.
If I had more time I would compile a how-to, but my real-life job is eating up way too much time. If I find some spare time I promise I will.

    happy hacking,

no it dosent metter you can leave you tmobile sim inside.
as he said first restore to fw 2.2
after that make sure you create a costum fw 2.2.1 with pwntool and tham update.

or what you could do is restore to fw 2.2(make sure its 2.2)
than just jailbreak and activate with quickpwn.

DO NOT use Quickpwn. Use the standard pwnage tool or you'll have problems.
