Default Unsure how to update already jailbroken 3.0 3G iPhone

    Hi,

I'm one of those who fell for the "convenience appeal" of iphoneunlockuk dot com - in 2009 I paid them and unlocked my 3G with their dressed up version of PwnageTool.

I successfully did a few updated since then but when doing the last update, to 3.0 7A341 WiFi stopped working and I've not done any updates since.

So current firmware is 3.0 7A341 and modem version 04.26.08 - Cydia is on the phone.

I have the latest iTunes 9.2.1 (5) on my G4 Powerbook.

I'm hoping that WiFi will work again if I update by as I'm so far behind, and no longer in touch with the new jailbreak tools etc. I'm unsure how to proceed.

I'd like to avoid having to wipe the iPhone completely.

I get an error on iCalified.com

    So that's the situation.

Can I simply hook up the iPhone in iTunes and update? Or do I need to do something with the latest PwnageTool?

Most info I find talks about new-to-be-jailbroken phones. Mine has been jailbroken for ages, I just need to do updates.

Appreciate your insights, or links to step by step instructions.

    Thanks!

Not sure if wifi will start working again after an OS update, it is quite possible it is a hardware fault.

The best way to diagnose wifi faults is to look at a syslog of iPhone startup. That shouldn't require you to change your iOS version - just install SBSettings and Syslog SBToggle.

Most software based wifi problems on the 3G and 3GS were tied to blacksn0w and a newer baseband.

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.3 Using PwnageTool (Mac) is the right guide for you. This gives you a safe way to try newer iOS versions and still revert back to 3.0 if necessary.

If you want to go to a new iOS version (and properly troubleshoot your wifi problem) then you must restore the device (with pwnagetool IPSW) - upgrade is not supported by Pwnagetool and generally not recommended when troubleshooting.

The best approach is to reload OS and set iPhone up as new. That eliminates stray settings and software as the cause of your problem.

You should make a backup of your iPhone before you start troubleshooting, then copy or zip up that backup, that way you can always restore from this backup later. If you don't make a copy of the backup, iTunes will overwrite your backup the next time you try and set the iPhone up as new.

Thanks for the info, especially your thoughts on the WiFi issue.

I wasn't thinking of hardware issues as it coincided with the last update, but I'll check the syslog. It sees the wireless network, I can enter credentials but it'll never connect. I thought it would really piss me off but for some reason, I've not missed it much. Would be nice to have it back though!

I heard/read somewhere that the latest jailbreak software like PwnageTool won't run on G4 Macs, that I need an Intel. Is that right?

I read your iTunes based iPhone back-up suggestions in another thread, I'll start with that, thanks.

Just logging my findings here, in case somebody else finds it useful...

I opened Cydia and was prompted for a bunch of essential updates. Did those. Then made sure I had SBSettings and installed Syslogd. It saves the output to /var/sys/syslog though I had no means of reading the files.

So I next installed (in Cydia again) file:// which allows you to use Safari to open local files. Simply open: fil:///var/log/syslog and bookmark it for convenience. Note the triple forward slash.

Next I went and switched on WiFi.

It sees my neighbour's network (locked) but not my own. Even when sitting one foot away from the Airport Express. My Powerbook gets full-on WiFi reception.

So I tried to manually connect, but it says it can't find it.

    Log says:

WiFiManager setEnabled: 2010-10-31 12:43:46 Requested wifi power change to on
    Preferences[168]: wifi handler: (null)
WiFiManager(Private) _powerChanged power changed calback, power is now: ON
    Preferences[168]: wifi handler: (null)
    WiFiManager _scanForClosedNetwork: MyNetworkName
    Preferences[168]: -
WiFiManager(Private) _scanCompletedWithResults: Unable to find network: MyNetworkName
Etc. Note, I typed those log records and left out some timestamps etc.

Doubt I can do much about this at this stage.

I'll try the iClarified link next.

yes you do. Plug the iPhone in via USB and download any AFC client ( iphonebrowser - Project Hosting on Google Code i-FunBox | File Manager, Browser, Explorer, Transfer Tool for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch via USB DiskAid transfers Files to iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch, USB External Drive PhoneView for iPhone and iPad - iPhone Disk Mode, SMS, Voicemail, Call History, Music, Photos, Notes Access - Ecamm Network )

If you used a jailbreak that was optimised for speed (blackra1n, limera1n, spirit) then you probably need to also install AFC2Add from Cydia. Otherwise you should just be able to browse the iPhone filesystem from your desktop machine.

Publish the syslog to http://pastesite.com/ or Pastebin.com - #1 paste tool since 2002! or New - Pastie and then link to that from this thread.

Also, what security settings do you have on your Airport Express WEP, WPA WPA2, none? Is your Airport Express a newer model that supports 802.11N or the original that supports 802.11G only.
