Volkspost, spoke too soon.... the problem keeps recurring when u restart after cleanly installing combo. It works fine until you have to restart your computer again. Very strange problem. I think on the restart and bootup, somehow the IOUSBCompositeDriver is getting corrupted or somehow being replaced? any ideas?? Appreciate your help... Thanks!

Update: further isolated the problem. It seems to only have a problem when I plug my iphone using the usb ports. When I plugged in an external hard drive and other devices the USB port works fine. Should I reinstall iTunes or something else related to the iPhone? Will try to reinstall iTunes first until I hear what you think... thanks again!

Another update: definitely something to do with itunes/iphone. When I tried to reinstall itunes, the same error came up saying that IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext was installed improperly and this is without my iphone plugged into the USB port. Any idea what's causing this?

Hmm, goto Applications/Utilities and start Disk Utility. Use Repair Permissions. maybe they got screwed up. After repairing permissions restart the Macbook. Let me know if this works

    Hey volkspost,

Good news and bad news... heres the deal. I repaired permissions and restarted. It worked until I restarted the computer again. Once it restarted I lost keyboard and mousepad functionality, but my wireless mouse worked (very strange). I had to restart in safeboot mode and my keyboard came back. Then I reinstalled the combo to get my keyboard and mouse function back in normal boot mode. Restarted again and keyboard and mouse was normal, but the IOUSBCompositeDriver problem came back. Ran the repair permissions again and restarted, and the iphone and itunes worked until you restart again. Once you restart you are back to the IOUSBCompositeDriver problem again. Something seems to be changing the repaired permissions back to what is causing the IOUSBCompositeDriver problem. It is just a loop with restart damaging the permissions that was just repaired. I was so happy that the repaired permissions seemed to have fixed the problem until I did a restart. So I think you isolated the problem to repairing the permissions, but the question now is how to make this repair permanent without it being changed at restart again. Any ideas?? Desperately trying to get my macbook pro back to normal.... almost at the homestretch thanks to you. Appreciate all your help thus far! Please let me know if you have any ideas how to fix this...

Ok, here's the scoop after trying so many things. Apparently somehow two copies of IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext ended up in 2 different folders on my MBP.

    Problem:
IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext existed in System/Library/Extensions as well as System/Library/Extenstions/IOUSBFamily.kext

    Solution:
Removed Extensions level instance of IOUSBCompositeDriver and everything worked fine

This problem resolves if you have a problem with starting up itunes or iphone not working through the USB connection and it gives you an error message that IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext was not installed properly. But in fact it was installed properly by 10.5.6 Combo package, it just somehow ended up in two folders.

A BIG SHOUT OUT TO VOLKSPOST WHO SPENT SEVERAL DAYS AND NIGHTS HELPING ME RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THIS GUY IS SO DEDICATED AND PATIENT AND I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR HIS HELP!! THANKS VERY MUCH VOLKSPOST!!

Glad hearing your Macbook is back on track. I had never seen this one.
