Do what I told you to, it will fix your specific problem.

The only reason you need to save your SHSH with TinyUmbrella is if you want a backup of your SHSH just in case Saurik's servers crash or he stops offering the ability to save SHSH via his server.

Hello, I think here is a good place to post my question..
I want to upgrade my 3Gs old bootrom to 4.2.1 firmware. Now I have 4.1 with BB 5.11.07.
    My plan is:
Download pwnagetool 4.1.3 and add 4.2.1 bundle to it.
Create my custom ipsw with it (on my mac)
Update iTunes to the latest version on my pc (my current doesn't run 4.2.1)
Use iTunes option to restore using local FW on my pc (do I need tiny umbrella here?)
When iTunes asks, I'll choose restore from backup
After finished, I should be able to open cydia.
I intend to install the latest ultrasnow and unlock my iphone.

Does anyone knows if that will work?

    And also:
will I have to use redsn0w after that.
Will I have to uncheck Activate (on pwnagetool)? What that means?
Do I have to copy some plist file to pwnagetool so that cydia is present in the custom firmware?

    Thanks!

Why use your PC for this? I would just do the entire custom IPSW process on my mac (assuming it had internet access and iTunes 10.1)

Yes, you will need to update iTunes on your windows machine to version 10.1 (minimum) to restore/sync at 4.2.1 - but you are just making things more complicated for yourself if you do the custom IPSW restore on windows. If you absolutely need to restore using windows, you need to use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to put your iPhone into "pwned dfu mode" before you restore via iTunes. This is a step that Pwnagetool normally does for you if you do the whole process on a mac.

Not if you have internet access on the computer you use to do the restore and iOS 4.3 hasn't yet been released.

No you won't, regardless of how you restore the custom IPSW, it won't include Cydia.
All the custom IPSW does is prevent your baseband update.
You need to hacktivate and install Cydia via Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 after the restore of custom IPSW is complete. Be sure to answer correctly when it asks you if you have old or new model 3GS.

You must perform this step AFTER you have jailbroken/hacktivated with redsn0w, not before. We don't recommend this option, but you will probably not experience any battery/push notifications/stability problems with such a small upgrade.

With the additional steps I have described, that will work

Yes, as I have already described.

Yes you must uncheck Activate within pwnagetool. This means that iTunes will activate the phone. In reality... for your specific bundle, if you tick "activate" it means that the phone won't boot properly after the restore is completed and you will need to start again with another custom IPSW where this option is off.

In theory, this will probably allow Cydia to be installed, but it won't work until you jailbreak/hacktivate via redsn0w - so in practice - there's no point fiddling around with plists.

    Olethros,
As always your help was very precise. Everything went well and now I have 3gs old bootrom with 4.2.1 unthetered.
Since my hackintosh is not reliable and doesn't have internet, I did the minimum necessary on it and the rest on windows.

For people on my situation (iPhone 3Gs with OLD BOOTROM, baseband is 05.11.07, if it isn't you have to double check if ultrasnow will work) here's a step by step of what I did:
    On my Hackintosh:
    Download pwnagetool 4.1.3 unlock edition
    Download 4.2.1 bundle
    Download the 4.2.1 firmware.
    Download your current firmware.
Add the bundle to the pwnagetool (iClarified explains how)
Run pwnagetool. Browse 4.2.1 firmware. Go into Expert mode and uncheck the Activate option. Build to make the custom firmware. At the end I didn't put my phone on DFU mode.

    On Windows:
    Download redsn0w 0.9.6rc8.
Run redsn0w 0.9.6rc8. It requests the current firmware. Mine was still 4.1, so you browse for your current official firmware, not the pwned one even if you used pwnagetool last time.
At this point you check only the "put device on pwned DFU" option.
Follow the instructions to do it
After putting on pwned DFU, open iTunes (I downloaded the latest version, 10.1.2).
Holding SHIFT, click Restore. Since 4.2.1 is the latest firmware, it works. In the future when a new firmware is released you will have to use tiny umbrella before clicking restore.
Browse the custom firmware you cooked on the Mac.
Let it do its thing and after that your phone will reboot. I closed iTunes at this point not letting it try to sync.
It will reboot on recovery mode. Now open rednsn0w again.
The current firmware now is the official 4.2.1, so browse that one.
After that check "Install Cydia" option only.
Follow the instructions and in the end you'll have a jailbroken device.

    On the iPhone:
    After rebooting, open Cydia.
    Go to Manage->Sources
Click on repo666.ultrasn0w.com and run ultrasn0w.
Done, you have a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone!
After that I went to iTunes and let it sync. It asked if I want to restore the previous backup and I allowed it. It restored. So far I only had a problem with one app that won't open anymore, the rest is perfect, so in my case it was worth it.

    Thanks Olethros!
