Default simple question to upgrade :)

i have a 3gs on 4.1 and 06.15 bb.. problem is it wont call in or out with even the official sim. and other sims it says ''restricted network''

so i want to upgrade to 4.2.1 and hopefully that S.A.M unlock might help?

since i'm on 06.15, i cant upgrade to 4.2.1 through itunes.. so can i hop from one jailbroken custom firmware to the new custom one(cooked in pwnagetool) without having to do an official fw upgrade first in itunes??
(as before i had to do this to get it to work on another iphone)

    thanks 86

This is likely a carrier problem. Talk to your carrier.

SAM is not an unlock, it is a way to legitimately activate your device with Apple via iTunes.

Read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm for details on what is supported with restoring your iPhone when you have 6.15 baseband. Keep in mind that 3GS comes in old and new bootrom variants and also that the only way to go back to 4.1 (if you discover that 4.2.1 doesn't help) is if you have a 4.1 SHSH saved for your device.

From my experience, this can be a number of different things.

    You can be IMEI blacklisted.
Your SIM cards can be too old or damaged (and need to be replaced for free)
Can be a hardware problem with your iPhone.
Most commonly it can be a provisioning problem with your carrier (which is why I said to call the carrier)
Can also be a temporary problem that requires a reset of the phone to fix - try a hard reset of the phone.

New bootrom means you are limited to tethered boot witha 4.2.1 jailbreak/unlock
TinyUmbrella can query your SHSH for you.
SAM works with iOS versions back to at least 3.1.3

sam works back to 3.1.3? when i tried it the option to deactive never came up? so i thought 4.2.1 was the solution to this....
i've been fiddling all morning and for some reason when i take the (new) sim out and re-insert it looks for a network and finds the network and seems to be fine.. but upon its search for 3g it wont allow it. nor go back to the old "o" sybol until i reinsert the card again.. imei blacklist could be the most possible of your reasons i think .. as i dont know the origins of the phone itself
