Default Resurrecting 3G S back to life after backing up data. Please help.

    Hi Oltheros,

As you had suggested, this is a new thread that I had opened to solve the other half of the puzzle. The first half of the puzzle is *SOLVED* and my big thank you to you and msft.guy. The other thread that *SOLVED* the puzzle is in here:

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f220/301181.htm

I need help in bringing back my 3G S to life without disturbing my existing baseband 05.11.07 while going up to the maximum possible firmware version while at the same time preserve existing data to avoid the headache of copying back the data to 3G S once it is working.

    Please help.

This is mostly answered in existing threads. So I'll be brief.

Take control of preserving your current baseband by ALWAYS restoring using custom IPSW (Pwnagetool or sn0wbreeze) and choosing the prevent baseband update option in these apps. iClarified has guides for pwnagetool. Just ignore any talk about loading the iPad baseband (you don't need that). There is also an ultrasn0w install guide.

Unless you can fix your bootloop (via the SSH ramdisk maybe), there is NO way to preserve the existing data (except for a manual backup/restore via SSH) before restoring to a newer iOS version
I recommend iOS 4.2.1 or 4.3.3 as stable/reliable/recent iOS versions (whichever you have a saved SHSH blob for)

    Thanks again for the insight.
I have saved 4.3.1 (I believe), 4.3.3, 5.0 beta, SHSH files thru TinyUmbrella last month before and after I did my unlock using UltraSn0w RC1. Do you think I go up to 4.3.3 or even greater while preserving my baseband 05.11.07 with the SHSH files that I saved and also stay jailbroken and unlocked?

Btw, I will check in iClarified for PwangeTool guide.

    Thanks.

    Excellent reply and very detailed.

Thank you for all your help.

Since I have backed up every application (the entire folder structure) I need (Notes, iTalk), after installing 4.3.3 using the PwangeTool, can I restore them back to the 3G S? I really don't want to lose the custom names that I have given for each of the iTalk recordings and same with the Notes app (don't want to lose the content of the notes by date). Also, I wanted to unlock the phone after installing 4.3.3. It should also be possible right?

    Appreciate your comments.

    Thanks.

Set up phone as new, resync the apps, music, contacts, bookmarks etc you want to sync.

Then manually restore the backed up app data files (not the whole app, just what looks to be the data files/app preferences) via SSH and be sure to set the correct file ownership and permissions (if you SSH in as mobile user rather than root, the file ownership should be right, but permissions might require tweaking)

Remember that appstore apps get a new random GUID type directory name when iTunes resynchronizes them to the phone.

Then when you launch the app, it should behave like it was previously (saved names for iTalk recordings and so on). If you discover you didn't restore enough data files or permissions, delete the app, resync it and try to copy via SSH the right data files again.

As long as you restore with a properly made custom IPSW (where baseband update is disabled ) then you can unlock with ultrasn0w
Pwnagetool 4.3.3.1 automatically disables baseband update. In sn0wbreeze I think you have to remember to tick off the prevent baseband update option (not really sure as I have never needed to use sn0wbreeze)

    Hi Olethros,

Thanks again. I attempted to follow the instructions strictly and I'm getting the following error:
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

I followed the iClarified article that you provided me. Instead of PwangeTool 4.3.3, I used PwangTool 4.3.3.1 as you had suggested in your previous post. Also, I was just wondering why the SHSH files that I stored using TinyUmbrella is not being used at all. I have it on Windows 7 notebook. If I have to use the saved SHSH files to fix this iTunes error, please let me know where to copy and what should I do after copying it to the iMac. Just to recall, I have the following saved SHSH files on my Windows 7 notebook:

Before I did the unlock last month with UltraSn0w RC1:

    4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.1.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.3.3.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-5.0b1.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-5.0b2.shsh

And after the unlock was done, I saved the SHSH files again:

    4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.1.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.3.3.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-5.0b1.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-5.0b2.shsh
    4234202094991-iphone2,1-5.0b3.shsh

Currently, the 3G S is in DFU mode and using iTunes 10.4 on iMac running Snow Leopard.

    Please advice.

    Thanks.

Okay.. I was going to suggest an easier - more GUI way - but when I checked Cydia - your device only has SHSH blobs from

iOS 3.1 through to iOS 4.2.1

Cydia has had problems with auto-saving SHSH blobs since iOS 4.3 (Apple has actively been trying to block this "Cydia SHSH auto-save")

So... you need to take extra good care of the 4.3.3.shsh blob that you have on your windows machine (save a copy online or on a USB stick). Whatever backup method you use,

To find the file on windows:

    LaunchTinyUmbrella

Go to the advanced tab, it will say something like "Save SHSH directory" and this will likely be a path like: C:\Users\username\.shsh select this text and copy it to the clipboard.
Hold down the windows key and press R, a run dialog should appear. Paste the path you copied into the run dialog and click OK.
The .SHSH directory should be opened in Windows Explorer. Find the "4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.3.3.shsh" file. Copy the file to your mac.

You should also make a backup of this file elsewhere for example copy it to a USB disk or use Dropbox (or even send it to yourself via email).

Launch TinyUmbrella on your mac (latest version)
Click on manual ECID, create an entry with:

Display Name = whatever you like
    ECID = 4234202094991
    iDevice: iPhone3GS

    Click Create Custom Device

Go to Advanced tab, make sure "request SHSH from Cydia" is unchecked and "save all available SHSH" is ticked. Click apply to save these changes (if necessary)
Select your custom device in the left pane
Click Save SHSH and wait for TinyUmbrella to finish querying Cydia/Apple for SHSH blobs.

Go back to the advanced tab, it will say something like "Save SHSH directory" and this will likely be a path like: /Users/username/.shsh select this text and copy it to the clipboard.

    Go to the Finder
Hold Command (the key with the clover on it) and press G
Paste in the path and click "OK/Go"
The .SHSH directory should open in the Finder.
Copy the 4234202094991-iphone2,1-4.3.3.shsh file into this directory - do not rename the file.

    Quit and relaunch TinyUmbrella.
Click on Show All SHSHs and verify that Tiny Umbrella has an entry iPhone 3GS 4.3.3 (8J2)-4234202094991

    Quit iTunes
In TinyUmbrella, click "Start TSS Server" - confirm that TinyUmbrella shows the text "TinyUmbrella's TSS server is running"

    Restart iTunes.
Ensure the 3GS is in pwned DFU mode (Pwnagetool should have guided you through putting the phone into this mode, if you put the phone into DFU mode without using pwnagetool or redsn0w to assist then it is NOT in pwned DFU mode)
Option-click restore in iTunes and browse to the 4.3.3 Custom IPSW.

    Olethros:

YOU'RE THE MAN!!! I got it.
I did what you had laid out and it works wonderfully well.

However, I still have some questions:

    1. I went into Cydia and installed SBSettings and when I press the Talk button to call someone, the phone is restarting to Safe mode with a exception thrown by MobileSubstrate. Restarting the phone didn't help at all.
    2. I unisntalled SBSettings and also MobileSubstrate and now the phone works fine.

I really wanted to use SBSettings as it is a really useful app. What do I do here?

    3. With TinyUmbrella when I did a refresh, I was also seeing 4.3.5 SHSH. Do I have to backup all of the SHSH files that I see in the list? Can't I upgrade to 4.3.5 or stay at 4.3.3 for now?

    4. What if I wanted to reload 4.3.3? Can I do it all over again even though I already installed 4.3.3?

    5. Since 4.3.3 custom restored ipsw has OpenSSH now, how do I remote connect to my 3G S to copy files that I have previously backed up?

Thanks again. Without your help, I would have lost my priceless data.!!!

Personally I use SBSettings all the time, and haven't had this problem.
have you installed anything else from Cydia? When You uninstalled mobilesubstrate did Cydia prompt to remove any other software besides SBSettings?

4.3.5 is NOT an untethered jailbreak. Right now 4.3.5 is pretty useless for unlockers/jailbreakers (but maybe that will change later if someone develops an untether for 4.3.5 - so save your 4.3.5 SHSH anyway). Stay with 4.3.3 (but you should install the Cydia package that backports the SSL fix that is included in 4.3.5)

Yes, same procedure (saved 4.3.3 SHSH blob + TinyUmbrella's TSS server + pwned DFU mode + custom 4.3.3 IPSW)

Yes, if you have installed OpenSSH then you should be able to connect via a SSH or SFTP program. Either connect via the 3GS's wifi IP address or use the itunnel_mux app to connect via SSH over the USB cable (faster than wifi)

Be sure to change your root password from the default alpine (there are some worms that infect other jailbroken iPhones with SSH installed and the default root password)
