I've read somewhere in this section that iPSWTool.app will handle the image conversion to let you put your own customs Boot and Recovery/DFU images.

I don't have a windows box 
It's not clear to me if ipswtool will feature it or not, beside the bending admin I havent been able to find any evidence that it will

That won't work. To begin with it's "openssl enc -e ...". "-d" is decrypt.
Second, that will encrypt only the payload, you still need the headers (ie full container vs just data).

I wrote a "decrypter" as proof of concept. It can be found at http://pasteb1n.ca/977711 (replace 1 for i). It takes a IMG2 file and saves it as PNG.
openssl, zlib and libpng are needed to compile it.
