I use a iPhone 3G and I am frustrated because the pwnagetool cannot recognize my ipsw file (iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore).
Anyone else know how to solve this or is having the same problem?

You do realise that the GM release candidate and the final iOS 4.0 had the same build number but were actually different.

Download this http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....3_Restore.ipsw and pwnagetool 4.0.1 should have no problems recognising that.

I downloaded the file "iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw", after having problems with the "iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Custom_Restore.ipsw" created by PwnageTool_4.01, but will this upgrade the iPhone to something I can't recover from (newbie). Looks like it's talking to the Apple site . . . . gulp!

You need to use iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 to make a iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Custom_Restore.ipsw then you need to follow the prompts from PwnageTool to help with restoring the iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Custom_Restore.ipsw you have just made via iTunes 9.2

As you are new to this you might find this guide useful - but you should use Pwnagetool 4.0.1 (the guide still mentions Pwnagetool 4.0) as 4.0.1 it fixes some bugs.
