Pwned iphone 2G 2.1 -> 2.2.1
I, I have a pwned (jailbroken and unlocked) iPhone 2G running 2.1. I would like to upgrade to 2.2.1 while keeping it unlocked and jailbroken. Am I supposed to use Pwnage again or QuickPwn?

You cant keep it jailbroken but it will still be unlocked (cause the baseband did not change). Update (NOT Restore) in iTunes to the latest version then use Quickpwn 2.2.5 to jailbreak and activate.
You could use PwnageTool aswell and create a custom 2.2.1 firmware and apply it to the iPhone via iTunes - same result.

i ended up having to use chronic's irecovery tool using these commands:
without restoring use the 'setenv auto-boot true'
then 'saveenv' then try 'fsboot'
