You can't brick your phone with an update in itunes because quickpwn will unlock/activate your original iPhone. and on the 3G it doesn't change anything other than activation.

Remmeber you cannot update using custom firmware only restore.

So if you want to keep all your data the best option is use itunes to update then quickpwn to unlock/activate/jailbreak.

But be aware that your iPhone may be relocked and non-activated when it restarts after the update (it depends on if apple updated the modem on the 2.1 update which I am not sure about!).

I'm on 1.1.4 right now, original iPhone.. one of the firsts..

I wanted to open a thread with this but I guess here is fine.

I have an iPhone 3G and I screwed up my lock code and had to restore over iTunes. For some reason, after restoring with the same 2.0.2 custom firmware, the phone wouldn't boot, just vibrate every 5 seconds with a spinning wheel.
I shut the phone down forcefully (home and power button for 10 secs) and then tried the whole thing over again. It wouldn't work at all with the any custom built firmware. I was using Leopard 1.5.5 and iTunes 8 at that time. I then found an old 2.0 ipsw and I could restore to 2.0. However, that 2.0 was not jailbroken. Now I couldn't upgrade to custom firmware 2.1 in iTunes 8 so I thought I try with iTunes 7.7.
In 7.7 I get all kinds of errors returned, but I guess 1600 is the most common. I am in recovery mode however when trying to update.
Possibly 2.1 firmware is too new for iTunes 7 so I thought I would download an old ipsw and create a custom firmware from there. Sadly, my Pwnage Tool 2.1 doesn't seem to accept any ipsw except the 2.1. All the others return "wrong firmware selected".

Please let me know what can be done. Does Pwnage Tool 2.1 not support older firmwares? And why doesn't QuickPwn take care of my 2.0 firmware?

Clearly PwnageTool 2.1 doesn't support 2.0x firmware. How silly.
I made a custom 2.0 firmware now. iTunes 7.7 still returns error 1600 to me. I am in recovery mode. No screen, iTunes detecs, extracts, prepares... then error.

yo i have a problem...
i updated my i phone via itunes to 2.1
and now i can't jailbreak it with winpawn..
it says error 1600

Do i have to activate my i phone first?

Pwnagetool 2.1 won't update your baseband!

So just make a 2.1 custom firmware and restore using it!

Winpwn does not work with 2.1. You have to use quickpwn.

i have a problem with my applications apparently i can install applications on cydia so it may imply that i have indeed successfully jailbreak my iphone so my problem is that every appstore application seem to fail to install it says "application name" failed to validate and i saw that answer for this error is that i need to jailbreak my iphone so how is that supposed to be

Hi, I just wanted to get a confirmation cause I'm not sure if I can do the following:

I have an american Iphone, week 48, OTB 1.1.2, upgraded to 1.1.3 with Ziphone, jailbreakd and unlocked

so Iphone is on 1.1.3 now
can I use pwnage tool to directly upgrade to 2.1 with the guide on the first page? without doing anything else to my iphone as it is now?
