tried three times to recover with a frimware from expert modes - everytime I had no cell network the cell option was missing in the settings menu. wifi worked.

I have exactly the same problem. I installed from beginner mode, but there is no network carrier to see, and also the same as office5280 here:

No signal or carrier listed, all i have is an empty signal strength indicator. The tethering was still enabled in settings

So now I'll try to restore it without the jailbreak. I hope this didn't brick my phone...

I just found out that I did it wrong. For an unlocked phone, in the beginner installation menu, you still have to to say "yes" to activate from iTunes. Then it will work, somehow counterintuively...
