I finally got it to work. Really and truly the best thing to do is upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.2. I did all the necessary work on 1.1.4 (IMEI spoof, etc) and then upgraded with the custom 2.2 software on my MAC and that was that. I wish I knew that 24 hours ago but hey, you live and you learn.

I tried to make my own with 2.1 but for some reason I was unsuccessful. I clicked on the update baseband and made sure it was on 3.9, along with bootneuter, etc but it will do everything except the IMEI spoof.

I have a 2G running 1.1.4 unlocked and IMEI changed with ZiPhone. Is it to my understanding that all I need to do is restore with iTunes 8 to the custom firmware linked in magicTR's blog?

You have to upgrade with the custom software made by magic with itunes 8.0 in order to make it work. you can find it at homeofmagic dot blogspot dot com.

So if I'm understanding properly, all I have to do is load the firmware into iTunes and then do an upgrade to that. Nothing else to do.
Right?

Right?
You should follow importand steps;
- First, your iphone need to be ready to 2.2 unlock. So you should use regular unlock methods after install 2.2FW (bootnouter) Your Iphone should have in 3.9BL
- Back your firmware to 1.1.4 and use ziphone to change its IMEI, in BL3.9.
- Lastly just install my custom firmware.
Result: You have unchanged imei with 2.2FW
Good Luck

This is what I did to mine and it worked:
Before -
1.1.4 software unlocked with IMEI spoof
After -
2.2 custom software unlocked with IMEI spoof
The before state was already done, as it was the state I was using my phone in. I then did a shift+restore and put the custom software on and that was that. Once you're done, make a few test calls to and from the phone to ensure it works.

Per m5runner, I was able to go directly from my existing 1.1.4 that was activated, unlocked, jailbroken, and IMEI changed with ZiPhone to 2.2 by just doing a shift restore in iTunes 8.0.2. Everything works great and it took about 5 minutes. Thanks!
