pwnaged 2g phone stuck in recovery mode
Apologies if this has been covered here before. I have searched these forums and could not solve the problem.
Bought cheap phone sunday for my sons 13th birthday and decided to try to unlock iphone 2g to use the sim from the new phone. We are on att family plan.
Use Pwnagetool 2.02 and initially was able to get cidia on phone but would not read the new sim and find service. I did select option that said no iphone contract through itunes so it would unlock. I was in simple mode. I felt I was not in dfu mode so I put the phone in dfu mode and retried the custom ipsw. I now just have a pineapple logo along with the Steve Jobs logo that says npebea!.
I have googled every possible error and solution i could think of. Nothing seems to work. The main errors trying to restore are 1600 and 1604. When I try to put in dfu mode, I cannot shut the phone off with apple slider. It is not there. I do feel it does shut off and then I hold sleep and home for 10 seconds and then home for 5. Itunes then pops up but the errors continue to come up. I have deleted the device support files in library/itunes/device support and have tried another mac to solve the problem to no avail. I have also tried different usb ports.
2 days now .......any help is appreciated. Thanks Mike

the iphone showing Steve tells you, it is already pwnaged. So there is no need for DFU mode - even more it leads to the problem you experience.
On your Mac make sure iTunes is running and you have the custom firmware file created.
Disconnect iPhone and Mac. Shut down the iPhone. When shut down hold Home button and keep holding while re-connecting to the Mac. Keep holding until iTunes sees an iPhone in recovery/restore mode. Let go of Home button.
ctrl-restore to your custom firmware, will work without throwing errors.
After completion you will want to sync with iTunes. On the first sync iTunes offers to "restore data from a backup". Dont do that, instead select "setup as a new iPhone". After that you can sync the iPhone. Explanation: When choosing the restore you might get back old preference files that can cause trouble later on

Thanks for help. Need more assistance
Thank you for the quick reply. I tried exactly what was outlined but got the same error(1604).
I used the sleep / wake and home buttons to turn off. I then held home button and connected. Itunes saw it in recovery mode and I let go of the home button. I then pushed control / update and it was trying to resore to factory apple firmware which was not successful. I then tried again this time using option/update to get to the custom firmware and again got the 1604 error.
How can I be sure the phone is first turned off and not just asleep prior to beginning this process?
Thanks again for the help.

Sorry my fault. After getting the iphone into recovery mode you have to option-click on restore in iTunes.
You have to shut off the iPhone, taht was the fault. Hold the start button on the iPhone until the red slider shows up. Slide to shut off. (All while iPhoen is disconnected from your Mac). Then reconnect and wait for iTunes to see the iPhone in recovery mode. The iPhone should show Steve. option-click on restore, select the firmware you built and go for it.
Make sure when building the custom firmware that you used the one for 2G iPhone, not for 3G, it wont work!

No red slider
My problem is that I can't get the red slider. I hold on the start and the pineapple goes off then comes on a few seconds later and then repeats like this. Any suggestions to turning off differently?

OK, hold home and start/stop for a while, the iPhone will shut off then.

error again 1604
I hold the home and start buttons and it shows the pineapple then goes blank for 2-3 seconds then shows the pineapple again briefly then goes blank again. I held it at least a minute. I assume it is off . I never get the red slider. I then hold the home button and connect. The moment I connect it the pineapple logo appears and then Steve. I continue holding until itunes sees iphone in recovery mode. I then option restore and navigate to the desktop file. It extracts the software and then prepres iphone for restore and that is when it hangs and I get another 1604 error and the iphone just sits there spinning and has the pineapple logo on it. Any other suggestions? I appreciate the help.

Just to doublecheck. The custom firmware you are trying to restore to is named
iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Custom_Restore.ipsw
and not
iPhone1,2_2.0.1_5B108_Custom_Restore.ipsw
right?
The last one would be the one for 3G iPhones. Just wanted to make sure that this is not the point.
Next one: You have connected the iPhone direct to your Mac, not using an USB hub.
If all this is ok, do the following: In iTunes restore to Apple firmware 2.0.1, this should work without any problems. You should end with a loched iPhone at FW 2.0.1.
You have to get into DFU mode then.
Shut down the iPhone (red slider)
iTunes is shut down
Connect iPhone and Mac
Hold start/stop and home for exactly 10 second, then release start/stop but keep holding home for exactly 10 seconds.
Screen should be black all the time!
iTunes should find an iphone in recovery mode, option-click restore to your custom firmware.
One more. before tyring this, create another custom firmware, you don have to connect the iPhone to the Mac to do this. Use this one for restoring.
hope that helps

I am definitely using the right firmware and following your instructions exactly. I cannot even restore this to the apple firmware as you stated. I continue to get 1604 error regardless of the firmware file. I try this in recovery mode.
I am able to get the phone into dfu mode but then itunes sees it briefly and thinks its an ipod that cannot be restored and I get error 2001. Thanks again for all the help.
