Question [Pwnage Tool 2.1] Creating .ipsw on Mac, then restoring on Windows

There's still no solid date for the release of Winpwn 3.0 and I am itching to update my pwned 2.0.1 original iPhone.

My main machine (which I use to sync everything with my iPhone) is a PC running XP. However, I also have a PowerBook.

Is it possible to use Pwnage Tool to build the custom .ipsw, transfer the file over to my PC, and then restore from iTunes on XP using this file?

I am not entirely sure how this will work once Pwnage Tool puts my iPhone in DFU mode. I'm guessing I can just unplug it from the Mac, then move to my PC to do the restore through iTunes on there.

Or is the best alternative to complete the full restore process from the PowerBook and then re-sync the iPhone again on my PC?

Cool. Since my phone is already pwned/jailbroken, do I need to let Pwnage Tool put it in DFU mode again? Or am I good to go once I've built the custom .ipsw?

I'm in more or less the same situation as the OP, except that I've never pwned my phone (currently on 1.1.4). What is advisable? Shouldn't it be possible to go straight to a pwned version of 2.1 using DFU restore? It seems that way from this discussion, though that was in a time when the pwnage tools still modified some library of iTunes (they "pwned iTunes"). Is it different now? I'm confused

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Since the Dev Team claims that Pwnage Tools doesn't make any modifications to the iPhone, it seems to me like it should be possible to switch from your Mac to your PC after Pwnage Tool has finished pwning the iPhone. It tells you to close Pwnage Tool and then use iTunes to restore the firmware. At this point, you can use your PC to restore the iPhone.

I just did this without any problems (albeit I'd already pwned the phone).

Edit: I'm actually having some problems restoring my backup file, but I don't think this has anything to do with Pwnage.

This confuses me even more. Pwnage tool doesn't modify the iPhone, and moments later Pwnage tool has finished pwning the iPhone.... Surely, pwning is a modification.

I think I'll just see what happens with the DFU restore of a non-pwned phone to a modified .ipsw. It seems from tutorials that the only thing pwnagetool does after creating the .ipsw, is to give instructions on putting the phone in DFU mode. So it should work. Hopefully.

The result: Yes, it is possible to go straight from 1.1.4-never-pwned to 2.1-pwned through iTunes under Windows with a modified .ipsw firmware file made by PwnageTool on a Mac.

Put the phone in DFU mode and just do it. I got the dreaded 1600 error a number of times; it turned out it was due to a corrupted .ipsw file. Make sure PwnageTool exits correctly, without errors in the creation of the file. And if the 1600 keeps occurring, just hold Home and Sleep for as long as it takes to reboot the phone and continue to enjoy 1.1.4 until WinPwn comes out.

The only thing to consider is that you don't get the baseband update (PwnageTool eliminates that from the .ipsw) -- but on the positive side, you don't need to unlock again.
