If I try to restore the original apple firmware the only thing that changes is that instead of the pineapple I get the apple.
Make sure you are in DFU mode. This is while Mac and iPhone are connected, iTunes is not running. Shut down the iPhone. Either hold start button until the red slider shows up and shut down. If this does not work, hold Home and Start button until the iPhone shuts down, release buttons then.
Make sure iTunes is not running, iPhone connected directly to the Mac (no usb-hub)
Then hold Home and Start for exactly 10 seconds, release start button then but keep holding Home (for about 10 seconds). Hold until iTunes starts up and finds an iPhone in recovery mode. Restore to Apple firmware 2.0.2 then. This will bring you to a locked iPhone at 2.0.2. Then use DFu again and restore to custom FW 2.0.1.

Thanks for all your help Volks I know the procedure i've done it about 70 times in one form or another, considering the phone starts up in recovery mode and I need to do a restart to get it in dfu the slide to turn off is not an option, it is also not that easy to get it into dfu when you are in recovery the 10 second trick doesn't work you need to hold it for less. you will know it's in recovery because the screen stays black and iTunes recognizes the phone. I'm pulling my hair out here maybe you have some other suggestions. come to think of it you can even repeat yourself maybe i'm missing something small. Thanks again for your patience.

Besides DFU restore my last idea would be to try on another Mac or Windows PC to just restore to fw 2.0.2 (Apple). Sometimes iTunes is just bit..ing around.

    one more

iPhone screen black and iTunes sees iPhone in recovery = DFU mode
iPhone shows USB cable with iTunes logo OR Steve and iTunes sees iPhone in recovery = simple restore/recovery mode

I'll try that in the morning but I already tried doing it with another account on the same computer, same result.

ah damm i went through the same problem back in july. its a b**ch to fix but after doing many different methods to try and fix it the only thing that worked was to try and restore on a different computer.

it may not work on all computers (pc or mac) but ur bound to find one that should let u restore. in my case it was my friends powerbook g4 comp that restored my iphone back to life. hope u find a way to fix ur iphone bro
