iphone 3g on 3.1.2 (yes very old), tried pwnagetools 4.1.3 unlock edition, updated baseband to 06.x. Runs fine until i installed ultrasn0w then the iphone was stuck in a recovery loop and it doesn ot restore anymore (error 1015).
a- Why would it happen?
b- What choices do I have?
Fixed by Creating a new custom firmware without baseband upgrade (did not find this info before).
Trying now to unlock :)
May I ask why did u try to go for the iPad's baseband if you had an old one which is perfectly unlockable !?? Be grateful it didnt go through bro !! u almost completed a not so smart move dude. Im glad it now works fine.
Most of the instructions are misleading, there is not a clear communication from dev team, there is a confusing wiki, there are 100s of tutorials. I thought I had to update the baseband because of a new restriction in the verification of the firmware.
I tried to read many articles and I thought I had to do it. But turns out it is not a requirement.
It is working now, I think I can downgrade the baseband later with fuzzyband, not needed now and I think for 3G the 4.2.1 would be the last firmware...

I dont know how accurate this info will be, is just my experience, but dont worry cause If I say something wrong, an administrator with correct me in a heartbeat !! thats the great thing about hachint0sh forums.
So, as I was saying, I thing you can downgrade with a custom cooked firmware as long as they share the same baseband. I had a 3gs running 4.1 05.13.04 and I was able to restore with Pnwage cooked firmware 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2. I dont know if this applies to all devices and circumstances but u got my 2 cents.
I am currently running a 3GS built sept 09 with firmware 05.11.07 and version 3.1.2 (7D11). IBoot 359.3 If I go to Cydia SHSH: ios 3.1---> 4.2.1+ are in green top of screen. Just want to go to iOS 4.1
I used a Macbook Pro on 10.6.6 and downgraded iTunes to 10.0.1
I used Pwnage Tool 4.1.2 and also 4.1.3 to create a custom IPSW and tried restoring that custom IPSW from iTunes and I received "The iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."
I was trying to go to iOS 4.1 on iPhone.
I did however notice that when I connected my device to Pwnage Tool to put iPhone in DFU mode iTunes tried to open.
Any solutions something I'm missing?
You haven't got your hosts file modified to either talk to TinyUmbrella's TSS server or to Saurik's server. By default, iTunes will talk to an Apple server (gs.apple.com) during restore and request a SHSH. The real gs.apple.com will reject a request for a 4.1 SHSH.Quote:

Im just a little confused what "pwned DFU mode" means. Im assuming it means that Pwnage Tool has to be opened and recognize that the phone has successfully made it in DFU? Not just by connecting the phone letting iTunes open, then putting the phone in DFU and restoring to one of the custom IPSW's I made prior?
I google Pwned DFU mode, and Redsn0w comes up. Am I suppose to download this and use instead of Pwnage Tool?

Yes, but you need to follow the steps in Pwnagetool to place the iPhone into DFU (that way Pwnagetool puts the phone into pwned DFU mode after it detects that you have placed it into regular DFU mode)Quote:

thank you for your helpful insight. I'll let you know what happens. Iv further read where you can use TinyUmbrella to download your SHSHs. When I set "hosts to cydia on exit" apply changes, close out, does this start TinyUmbrellas TSS server as well. If not should I do that as well
