Questions about jailbreaking a 3g iPhone?

Pardon my ignorance, I haven't bee able to find a clear answer regarding this.

I have a 3g iPhone with the latest firmware installed, 2.2.1 (5H11).

I am looking to just jailbreak my phone, I DO NOT need it unlocked or activated.

Can I run the latest PwnageTool without creating a custom firmware? Basically just run the tool and jailbreak?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Well its easier if you run QuickPWN on it. Its faster and you dont need to unlock it (actually you cant because there is no bootneuter unlock for 3G).
