Hi I'm new to mac, borrowed a MacBook to Pwn my iPhone. I clicked on link to download 1.1.4 Restore file, after it completed downloading, it automatically unzips the 162MB file and the result is a folder called 'iPhone1,1_1' saved on the desktop, not a .ipsw file which is what I was expecting. What did I do wrong?

You didn't do anything wrong! That is what it does.
If you want the IPSW file check the locations on the mac where iTunes stores the restore files in the correct form.
I put the location of those files in the FAQ (can't remmeber off the top of my head but its in bold in the faq!).
If you don't already have the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware just connect your iPhone click on restore and it will download it in one go!
