[Pwnage 2] Tzones Addon w/o Cydia

With all the debates going around about what's causing the iPhone slowness/instability/battery issues, I wanted to try a "most basic" version of the iPhone and see if they go away. One thing I can't live without is the TZones hack. So I went and made TZones work without Cydia or SSH.

I've made a file that you can plop into Pwnage, and then you can de-select Cydia during installation.

I've only used this on my phone, so no promises that it works elsewhere. But it does work on mine.

Also, there's lots of threads on what's causing the issue. I don't want this to turn into another one of those threads, so please keep on topic.

Did your battery life improve without Cydia?

I can't really answer that without going against what I said in the first post. But even on 1.1.4, I didn't install much software. With the AppStore here now, I'm finding the only thing I need from Cydia in ssh for TZones, or TZones directly (thanks Bigboss!). So regardless of whether it decreases battery or not, I don't need it.

Try it yourself. The Dev Team has made the process really easy, and Apple has made restoring your iPhone really easy. Then post your results in one of the many, many threads on the issue.

iRobie, thanks for the link. There are a lot of strings & keys in your preferenecs.plist file that may be specific to your phone. Are you suggesting that I should replace my existing plist file with this. I was hoping if you can point to the Tzones specific part in the file.

If you use that file during the PwnageTool process, you won't need to worry about your original settings. Any automated TZones package has always delivered a full .plist file with those settings. I haven't checked an untouched .plist to the new .plist, but it works for me. Installing this file is exactly like installing the TZones package from Cydia on 2.0, or from Installer on 1.1.x

If you're wanting to SSH into your phone and modify just what you need (in order to preserve your VPN settings, for example), there are two settings:

1. First, you'll need to move the PAC file to the correct location (I think /var/preferences, but I can't SSH anymore, so you may need to test this)
2. Then, edit /var/preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist. The lines in the downloaded file are 94-120. Paste those lines in the same spot on your .plist file - below ip1 device.
3. Reboot your phone

I had a problem with the second item here - editing the .plist file (before Bigboss released his version). I tried editing an offline file locally and uploading it, then tried editing the file directly on the device. I don't remember which worked, but only one did. Both should work, but only one did. Anyway, so if it isn't working, try editing the file in a different manner.

Good luck. If you haven't enabled VPN on your phone, I don't think there's harm in using this or the BigBoss/Cydia version. They should be identical.

iRobie. Again, thanks for the detailed info. I'm a bit wary of running pwnagetool again because while upgrading to 2.0, it failed thrice. I'm not sure its my computer or phone or the tool.

Regarding transferring the file to iPhone: There's a tool called diskaid. It'll let you browse your phone like a disk.

I compared the values in proxy.pac & preferences.plist and they appear to be the same as before (for 1.1.1). I don't know why it doesn't work for me.

OK. It finally worked. Thanks to all including forums like modmyifone.com. Previously only email worked. I used to get HTTP ERROR CODE. Here's what I did.

1) Install diskaid to browse files on your iPhone without ssh
2) Add this to your preference.plist (copy old file to a folder (on your computer), edit it & add the following, delete old file from device & copy this new file to device). No need of proxy.pac
