Run blackra1n > make it ra1n
press and hold home and power
you will be back to your normal state
Hi
It was the same for me. 3GS 3.1.2 to iOS4 PwnadeTool. Stuck in Recovery mode with black screen - error 1600 in iTunes and nothing happened.
I just push again sleep/wake button with home button for loooong time and the apple showed - after a while I release s/w button and the pic of Recovery mode shows - then pick the custom IPSW and ready to go!

Well, my problem is exactly what the OPs is. I just bought this too from a guy who had it jailbreaked and unlocked. He sold it to me in restore mode. I ran redsnow from there and everything went fine. Pineapple guy and all. Now stuck in DFU. They guy said he thinks it is the old bootrom so I answered no in redsnow when it asked is this the newer phone.
On this other forum someone suggested to answer yes first and if it doesn't work then run it with no. WHY DIDN'T REDSNOW THINK OF THAT? AND REDSNOW DOES A HORRIBLE JOB AS EXPLAINING THINGS TO A N00B.
"If you have a late-model device and don't give redsn0w the correct answer, you will likely need to do a system restore to recover from the mistake."
To a N00b that sounds like oh, that's not a biggy and I can fix it and try jailbreaking again. BUT NO! it seems like they mean using itunes and letting apple upgrade to the latest everything OS and baseband and be stuck not being able to jailbreak again because you are on newer baseband.
Now all this lingo makes sense to me after I've screwed up
Any solutions yet? This really sucks
Is this your way of tellin me we are all screwed? haha
SO WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?
I'm just looking to A) bring it to a state where in the near future it may be able to be jailbroken and unlocked or B) just bring it back to working state and sell it to someone with AT&T carrier
Also, how would I do either A and B?
THANKS!

So I did the same thing... I clicked old bootrom but it was new and now im stuck in DFU mode wont turn on... someone said they got it to turn on for a second only for it to shut into dfu again almost right away.
Run redsn0w 0.9.8b5 with the ipsw of your choice and it will get it out of dfu mode
This is what I did:
1. use redsn0w to put iphone 3gs into pwnd DFU mode
2. use shift+click restore on itunes to install a custom firmware made with snowbreeze (I used 4.3.x original firmware to make the custom)
3. after restore, use redsn0w to boot the iphone tethered
ta da! no longer in dfu mode. but now i'm stuck on the emergency screen...
I tried using redsn0w to install cydia (instead of boot tethering), but it gets stuck on the "activation bundles" screen. I also tried TinyUmbrella's "fix recovery," and the latest green poison, but no success. Any ideas?
edit: after being on the emergency screen for a while, the iphone goes into the dfu loop again...this time i can't do the "redsnow-pwnd-DFU" + "itunes-restore-snowbreeze-custom firmwre" trick.
stuck :(
