Some people say they have seen better battery life with 4.6, but there is no real proof. I say leave it on 3.6!

The settings are fine but no advantage of being on BL4.6.
But if your in UK and your BL is 4.6, your warranty will remain intact as the iPhone's can now be officialy activated through iTunes for any O2 sim, so no contract anymore. So if you got a problem with your iPhone you could get it repaired by Apple for free.
If your on BL3.9 your warranty wil be void unless you know how to get it back up to BL4.6.
If anyone knows how to get their bootloader back up to 4.6, any help would be appreciated. Thanks
If your phone is working fine. Don't mess around with the bootloader unless you know what you are doing.
You can really mess up your phone.
The bootloader change is needed only if you want to put it back like when it's out of the box for apple warranty stuff or you want to send back to apple.
There are 2 versions: 3.9 and 4.6 and that is based on the week of production.
Rule of thumb:
If phone was OTB <= 1.1.1 - you have a 3.9
If phone was OTB >=1.1.2 and less than 2.0 then you have a 4.6 ***
*** if the phone was unlocked using iliberty or iplus - the BL changed from 4.6 to 3.9FB
*** if the phone was unlocked using ziphone (bad bad bad) - the BL changed from 4.6 to 3.9FB
*** if the phone was unlocked using pwnage then you can end up with 3.9FB or 3.9neutered of 4.6neutered.
If phone is 3G, boot loader is 5.xx ? (you cannot mess around with BL on 3G)
The way to change BL version is to use bootneuter. Again, don't mess around if you don't know what you are doing. You've been warned !!
And lastly, if you really really screwed up by blindly messing around, you will end up with a 3.8 bootloader.
Changing 3.9 to 4.6 to get better battery life is a myth to me. I don't see any direct or overwhelming confirmation that it is so.
Some great advice here, cheers for posting.
one question:
when i sue the Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 in Expert Mode, it asks if i want to allow upgrade of the BootNeuter (or BootLoader... sorry i don't have that laotop with me now)... so,
should i allow UPGRADE? FYI, i haven't done that in the past, but what would happen if i did? :hack:
@yehudah72,
According to your signature, you have an iphone 3G. Is this the phone you are working on?. Pwnage 2.0.2 + iphone 3G is for jailbreak + activation only. You will not be able to change Bootloader.
How can I tell what version of the bootloader my iPhone has as stock in case I want to revert to factory condition later?
iphone 2G ?? or 3G ?
if 2G, post your serial number (first 5-6 digit will do) then we can tell you.
It's a 2G. the serial is 7U729xxxxxxxxxxxx
3.9, right?
Does pwnage/bootneuter CHANGE the bootloader version or change the bootloader itself? I'm slightly confused.
week 29. Definitely 3.9 bootloader
Pwnage/bootneuter does not change the bootloader version unless you tell it to (during the custom image creation).
To have an unlock, bootneuter will need to neuter your Bootloader (this is a must).
