Sorry for the confusion. You are correct, I was referring to my iPhone 2G. I have the 3G now but keep the 2G just for travel now. I was just pointing out that there are reasons for unlocking even if you are on AT&T.

What's the use of jailbreaking your new 3g phone if you're not installing cydia? i know cydia is slowing down the phone
Ash
You're confused. Run a standard image for a few days and then pwn. You'll observe that the 2.0 code is buggy and slow.
However to answer your question more directly if you want the apps that are packaged for Cydia then you pwn. If not then don't. Everyone is a special case (well maybe not tethering) so there's no generic answer to the question "Is it worth it?".

the point of jailbreak (up to date) is that it allow you to customize your iphone
, use your phone as modem, have full asset to your phone using (openssh), and many more feature update daily
and you can do many things that i am not allow to mention here
.
Iphone 4 32GB Black!!

Filmware "LATEST"
Unlocked using "Unknown Method"
Text:
In/Out <ok
Call:
In/Out <ok
Signal: "Depend on Provider"
GPS:
Work
Wifi:
no problem

most noticable advantage of jailbreaking your 3G is to be able to tether your phone as a modem for your laptop. (NetShare gone from Appstore again, and saurik ported/released a free proxy solution where nullriver wants 10 bucks... 3proxy or so)
that way you can even play world of warcraft during long trainrides :>
in fact... i can live without themes and cosmetic customization of the frontend. really, its toys and gimmiks anyway.
but castrateing the phone of its true potential (modem use i.e.) is something a JB definitly is worth for.

Sorry, there is no Jailbreaking for Dummies book yet (it's a good idea though
. You need to know at least something if you want to fiddle with the marvel of engineering - Apple's iPhone.
Good luck!

I'd like to think my site is a jailbreaking/general hacking for dummies book if you will.
A couple of us have created very detailed lists of why you should jailbreak, and what it means.
I know that BigBoss has an illustrated article here: http://thebigboss.org/why-jailbreak-iphone/
I have one here: http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/read_me_first.html
Bottom line, if you like your phone how it is now and don't need anything else, then jailbreaking is not for you.

No one has been able to awnser this simple question, can I still use iPhone 3G as a phone if I jailbreak it?
This being nothing will change from my service and I will be using AT&T, I see no reason in doing unlocking except if you feel AT&T are nazis, from my experience with them they have the best towers in my area so it makes since that apple would choose them for a phone that requires usage of the internet so much.
Also, are there any DS emulators up yet? I think they would work sick on the thing, but I here to screen would be to small, I think that is crap if you ask me and games like pokemon/advanced wars would kickass and totally work.
This seems like a cool place and I plan of being an active member here.
Joining the revolution monday when my local AT&T gets there shipment of iPhones back in, been late to the party but that was only because of the steep price tag. Had to get to a certain point at my job when I could affor 100 dollars a month service.

To answer the original question: the only reason I jailbroke my iPhone 3G is because I wanted to upgrade to software 2.2 but still hope (someday) to unlock this phone so I can use it with other SIM cards. The only way to do that was to use Pwnage to upgrade the software while leaving the 2.1 baseband intact. This is because the dev team are only working on the 2.1 baseband (for now).
