Unhappy PLS HELP!! 1st gen 4gig iPhone - unusable after pwnage

This is what I was afraid would happen so I was trying to be soooo careful and ask tons of questions. But after following instructions and restoring with the custom .ipsw generated by PwnageTool, all iTunes says now is, "The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone."

...and all I see on the phone's screen is the slide "for emergency use" and a USB cable and iTunes logo. No service, of course. I was using the 2.0.1 software from Apple as the source for the custom .ipsw.

    What do I do now?

I was trying it in DFU mode. Used PwnageTool to create the custom restore .ipsw from Apple's original (1,1_2.0.1) and put the phone in DFU mode as the last step in PwnageTool before quitting that app, starting iTunes and CTRL+clicking restore to select the new custom firmware. Tried this several times and tried starting the entire process over again a few times, restarting my mac in between - nothing worked.

I finally decided that since I need a working phone, I would for now just go ahead and try using Apple's official 2.0.2 firmware and THAT worked just fine. I'm restoring my backup as I type this.

But I'd really like to jailbreak it again. Not unlock - I've no need for that. But I want my jailbreak apps back :-(

Oops. I meant to say I went ahead and used Apple's official 2.0.1 firmware - NOT 2.0.2.

If by that you mean it sounds like I'm on an AT&T contract you're right. And yes I've checked and re-checked and the firmware I'm starting from is 1,1 (my understanding is that 3G firmware would be 1,2, correct?).

Here's what I did in Pwnage Tool 2.0.2...

    1. Selected iPhone, of course.
    2. Selected the official Apple 2.0.1 firmware download (1,1 version)
    3. General Settings:
    - unchecked 'Activate the Phone'
    - left 'Enable Baseband Update' unchecked
    - left 'Disable Partition Wipeout' checked
    - adjusted 'Root partition size' to 512
    4. Bootneuter Settings:
    - unchecked 'Neuter Bootloader'
    5. Cydia Settings:
    - I did nothing. Nada. Zip.
    6. Custom Packages Settings:
    - I did nothing (left both Cydia Installer and Installer checked)
    7. Custom Logos Settings:
    - unchecked both 'Boot Logo' and 'Recovery Logo'
    8. BUILD

But I haven't been able to get the resulting custom .ipsw to work, dammit *sigh*

To tell the truth, I'm more than a little wary of trying it right now. It's late and I'm not sure I want to take a chance I might not have a working phone in the morning, y'know?

    I know.....I'm pathetic (^_^)

All your settings look good so far. My guess would be that you just missed to DFU restore. As far as I understand your iPhone now is at Apple FW 2.0.1, right?

    Do the following then.
    1. While Mac and iPhone are connected shut down the iPhone (Hold start button until red slider shows up - slide to shut off)
    2. Make sure iTunes 7.7.1 is installed and not running.
    3. Hold start button and home button exactly for 10 seconds, then let go of start button but keep holding home button
    4. Hold home button for 10 seconds and wait for itunes starting up automatically and finding an iPhone "in recovery mode". Release home button on the iPhone. The iPhone's sceen has to be black all the time. If you see a USB cable and the iTunes logo you are not in DFU mode. In this case you have to restart the procedure.
    5. If in DFU hold option on the keyboard and click "restore". Select the custom firmware you built before.
    6. When done connect to iTunes, the iPhone should activate with your AT&T simcard
