[Pawnage] make sure to use the correct firmware!
when using the pawnage tool make sure that you use the correct firmware for your device. DO NOT USE iPhone firmware on a iPod touch and vice verse as you risk making your device inoperable. Also make sure that your firmware comes from a trusted source. No links to custom firmware as the same rules apply as if it were the 2.0beta.

there have been heaps of people with this problem lol
I guess that since all checks are taken from iBoot then the iPhone doesnt care if its about to be turned into an iPod

[SOLUTION] Black screen after using incorrect ipsw
If you tried pwning your iPod with an iPhone firmware and you ended up with a black screen there is a solution. I am not sure if the solution works on iPhones pwned with iPod firmwares but I think it will.
Connect your iPod to your Mac (sorry, Mac only) and kill iTunes and iTunes helper. Download iNdependence and run it. iNdependence displays in what mode your iPod is at the lower left corner. Put your iPod manually in DFU mode (you will know when it is in DFU when iNdependence says so) and exit iNdependence.
Run iTunes and restore with an original IPSW and your iPod will come back to life. Personally did that on a friend's iPod and it worked flawlessly.
iNdependence rules!
