Default No jailbreak with 3GS (3.1.2) using PwnageTool 3.1.4

So now we have got the new iPhone 3GS, brandnew out of the box. The Software Version is 3.1.2 according to iTunes version 9.0.2 (running on a MacBook Pro).

I surfed the net for a good way to jailbreak the device and ended up with PwnageTool. I used PwngTool 3.1.4 and tried to jailbreak (don't need to unlock). To create the custom ipsw file I used FW 3.1.2 for the 3GS named iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw But somehow one of two things happened:

Either (after creating the custom restore ipsw) iTunes would give me this annoying 160X error message (although Pwnage had put the phone into DFU mode), when I tried to restore it with the custom file.

Or (and this is a tragedy) it all seemed to go well, the custom file was installed but then, when it should come back into normal mode so that I could restore it with my backup, the screen turned black and iTunes reported, that the phone was connected in (in German) Wartungszustand - I guess that would be translated "service-mode" and it means, that it still was in DFU mode. So I had to do another Restore!

I only could get out of DFU mode by Restoring it using the original ipsw directly from apple through iTunes.

I read some more information on the Dev-Team blog where someone said, that iHelper has to be killed so I rebooted every device, I killed iHelper and so forth. All that did not help, the same problems occured.

Does anybody know, what the problem is or can anyone help me out on that?

    Apreciate any suggestions!

Find your bootrom version using this post.. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X no jailbreaking is required to get this information.

I suspect (because your iPhone is new and based on your description) that you have iBoot-359.3.2

The only jailbreak supported on iBoot-359.3.2 is blackra1n RC3. Pwnagetool does not yet work with this bootrom version.

Thank you for your post. You were right, the bootrom is iBoot 359.3.2

Now I do have one more question: when I tried to jailbreak the phone one of the failures, that occured was that the phone stuck in DFU mode after restoring the custom ipsw. iTunes would not let me install my backup. What I didn't know then is, how to kick the phone out of DFU mode. What would happen, if I went through the process again and then at simply kick it out of DFU mode - would the custom ipsw be installed and would that work, or should I leave it and wait until someone solves that problem?

    Best regards ....

Custom ipsw will not work on your iPhone end of story.

Put your iPhone into dfu and restore it with original 3.1.2 ipsw. That should mostly work.

Then jailbreak with blackra1n if you want to.

Can i know if my phone has the new bootrom or not by looking at their production week? I just bought 2 iPhone 3GS for me and my GF.. Mine is on week 54, and my GF is on week 35.. I bought them at the apple store in sydney yesterday.. My GF is running the 3.0.1 FW and mine 3.1.2 FW.. Correct me if i'm wrong, i can use Pawnage or Blackrain on her iPhone, and only blackrain on my iPhone?

Your hunch is probably right. You should use this guide PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X to verify for sure. The production week gives a rough guide but the method I explain is 100% accurate and does not make any changes to the iPhone.

Just for the record, Pwnage can be used on any 3GS.
The problem is that it is a tethered JB and after the initial JB tou need to run BlackRa1n to kickstart the phone each time.
As for the week numbers <40 will have the old iBoot
    >39 will 'probably have the new one but some week 40/41 have the old one.
Any with >41 will almost certainly have the new iBoot unless the first digit is 5 and the second digit is alpha (usually G or K) in which case it is a refurb and the phone has the iBoot of the original manufacture so can not be determined from the s/no.

I don't have a 3GS with new bootrom so have been relying on reports from people who tried PwnageTool with new bootrom without success.

How does one get the 3GS to boot after loading the custom ipsw? They reportedly tried blackra1n RC3 and it did not work. iRecovery??

Nor do I. I have not tried it myself but when I asked MN he replied:
    MuscleNerd
pwnagetool will create a fileystem which new iBoot's will refuse to load when asked. It should be able to be jump-started with blackra1n
So we believe it should work. but I have not had chance to try myself. If you know people that confirm it doesn't work I'll let him know.
