I was given a 32 iPhone 3gs that was on the 4.2.1 software and unlocked but they upgraded to the 06.15.00 firmware. When I went to turn the phone off it became stuck on the apple logo.

I quickly found out it was unlocked via tethered mode. I could only get it restored on 3.1.3 and unlocked.

What are my options now...

Can I get it upgraded to the 4.x and unlocked?

Depends on what SHSH you have saved. Have you checked this with TinyUmbrella?

Old or new bootrom? (I'm assuming new because it was tethered at 4.2.1 but the previous owners might not have known that it was possible to untether an old bootrom 3GS at 4.2.1)

SHSH: 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1
Bootroom: iBoot-359.3.2

Simply use TinyUmbrella - start the TSSServer

Download 4.1 IPSW for the 3GS

Pwnagetool custom IPSW is generally NOT supported on the 3GS new bootrom (which is what you have)

The only iOS version that you can make a Pwnagetool Custom IPSW for a new bootrom 3GS is iOS 4.1 - this is because it uses a special trick (partly blocked in iOS 4.2.1) that doesn't require the boot chain to be pwned (it is this boot chain pwning that the new bootrom blocks)

Followed the steps below but hit the part in red.
Simply use TinyUmbrella - start the TSSServer

Download 4.1 IPSW for the 3GS
[All iPhone & iTouch Firmwares] System Restore Image (download here)

Then restore to iOS 4.1 - it will error in 1015

Use tiny umbrella to exit recovery mode.


I just turned on iTunes, connected the iPhone. Did it need to be in DFU mode or anything?


What could I be missing?

Error 3004 is - No internet connection during the firmware restore. iTunes can't connect to gs.apple.com. This should not hapen when using TSS server as iTunes should be communicating directly with TSS server on the same machine.

Are you running any other software that might run on port 80/443 (typically this would be a web server)
Do you have any firewall software installed on your machine?

Ok Update.

Took the phone to my other computer. Ran Tiny Umbrella, Saved the SHSH.

Downloaded the IPSW, restored. Everything worked fine.

Phone booted. But no Cydia or Unlock???

You need to use redsn0w's just boot tethered now option to get cydia and unlock working. Otherwise - your iPhone doesn't have the required kernel patches to modify the lower level processes - like ultrasn0w
