Lifehacker App finally available! ...requires firmware 3.1.3... DAMN!!!
I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS which is currently running firmware v.3.1.2... the screen grab below sums up my problem quite clearly!

I've been waiting for a Lifehacker app to make it to the app store for some time now, and once it finally does, it doesn't work with my current setup because my firmware isn't 3.1.3.
What are my options here? Is it simply a matter of syncing my phone with iTunes to make one last full backup, then using Pwnage Tool to create a custom jailbroken 3.1.3 firmware to restore my phone with, then re-sync with iTunes and restore the last backup?
Any caveats?
Is Blackra1n able to jailbreak 3.1.3, or just Pwnage Tool? I've had several failed attempts at jailbreaking in the past via Pwnage Tool, and so I opted to use Blackra1n instead (I even followed the iClarified tutorials on using Pwnage Tool 'to-the-tee', and still it wouldn't allow me to restore from the custom firmware I'd just created???)
Any tips would be great appreciated? Thanks!

Depends on whether you have old or new bootrom 3GS. Custom IPSW only works with old bootrom. This limitation is documented on the dev-team's blog posting for Pwnagetool 3.1.5 but many people don't seem to be aware of this.
You are with AT&T so unlock is not a problem. You will end up keeping 05.11.07 baseband (from 3.1.2). That works fine but if you really want the new 05.12.01 baseband there are a couple of solutions for that.

Blackra1n only works for 3.1.2 and 3.1
If pwnagetool failed for you, you either were doing the wrong thing (probably with activation) or you have new bootrom.
When you jailbroke with blackra1n do you have to run blackra1n after every restart of the iPhone (tethered jailbreak)? That means you have new bootrom.

There's an app called FW Changer available on Cydia that spoof's the iPhone firmware, thereby convincing MobileiTunes and regular iTunes that the phone is running the latest firmware even though it technically isn't
FW Changer from the BigBoss Repo did the job perfectly! I simply entered in 3.1.3 into the firmware section, and 7E18 into the build section, and presto! I can now use apps like the Lifehacker app that I wasn't previously able to install.
Happy, Happy. Joy, Joy!

Yeah I forgot about that tool. Glad you found a solution.
That tool won't help if the app is checking the OS version because they use a new API released in that OS version (however 3.1.3 is such a minor update that I don't think any new public APIs were added)
