Unhappy JB on 3.1.3, remote wipe and stuck at apple logo

    Hi,

With help from this forum, I upgraded by jailbroken 3.0.1 3GS to 3.1.3 using pwnagtool 3.1.5.
Today, IT was testing remote wipe in Exchange 2003, and wiped my iPhone. Big problem is that it rebooted and has stayed at an apple logo for 5+ hours. I can get it into DFU mode, but that doesnt allow me to restore my 3.1.3 custom firmware back (error 1600). From what I know, the custom firmware can only be applied if in recovery mode.

So, how can I get into recovery mode or otherwise get the phone OS restored? This is a 3GS with the older bootrom, original baseband, and it does have SHSHs on file with Cydia for 3.0, 3.1.2, 3.1.3

Do a DFU restore to 3.1.2 using SHSH and then use your custom ipsw to 3.1.3. I think that's your only shot at this point. Remote wipe erases the firmware as well and returns the device to a state where it will require a restore to work again.

You are correct that the 3GS cannot have custom firmware installed in DFU mode -- so you'll need to go to a legit firmware first so that you can access recovery mode, then use recovery mode to upgrade to the custom firmware. Just make sure you don't upgrade to a legit 3.1.3 -- you'll kill your unlock (permanently until 4.0 comes out), and I don't believe you can jailbreak a stock 3.1.3 at this point either, so be extra special careful.

So how do I do a DFU restore using a 3.1.2 SHSH?
Do I just get a stock 3.1.2 firmware file and set saurik's server in my hosts file?

    Check the stickies

That is one of the most common questions we have.

Short answer is yes, you'll need to update your hosts file to point gs.apple.com to saurik's server or use TinyTSS / Firmware Umbrella to man-in-the-middle the SHSH / sig check.

I got a stock 3.1.2 restored. Now, I want to upgrade to my previously created 3.1.3 custom firmware created in pwnagetool.

I have tried shift-restore in iTunes, but it errored out with an error 1600. Then I thought, that since the current 3.1.2 is not jailbroken I would need to get into DFU mode to do the restore ... this also gives an error (1604). I am not sure what to do next.
I only have an OSX VM to run pwnagetool in, so I need to do the actual restore in Windows7.
    Advice?

After the previous issues trying to restore the custom fw, I did the following:

Downgraded to OS 3.0.1 (lucky I had SHSHs on file in Cydia). I followed Saurik's guide:
First restore in DFU mode. Get an error 1015 at the very end. Immediately restore again with same fw file, and get another 1015 error at the end. Immediately jailbreak with redsnow 0.8.
It rebooted and I was back at a jailbroken 3.0.1.
From there, I simply connected to iTunes again and restored the 3.1.3 custom firmware (without being in recovery or DFU mode).

So why did I go all the way back to 3.0? Simply because it was the last jailbroken version I had .. and all of the files and such were on a second computer already. Quick and easy for me.

I am back to a jailbroken 3.1.3 now. There were probably quicker and simpler ways of doing this, but it was late and I was tired. Glad to have it all back. No more remote Exchange wipes for me. Good night.
