    Default jailbreaking & future updates

I'm running 2.1 on my un-jailbroken iphone 3G... I'm keen to jailbreak it, but I want to be sure about how future firmware updates will work out...

As I understand it, it's possible to jailbreak without losing your user data (i.e. SMS database, call logs, contacts etc.) by either using Quickpwn, or using Pwnagetool and then syncing to a previous (pre-pwnage) backup... is this correct?

So that gets the phone Pwned in the first place, but how is it possible to update to subsequent firmwares without losing all this data again? If you backup your iphone while pwned, are those backups compatible with unpwned firmwares?

You can use Quickpwn and wont loose any data, the iPhone will just be jailbroken.

let's assume you are using Cydia then to install apps, they all come with prefs and settings. One day we will see the next firmware. You seem to be a legit user and probably want to restore to the new firmware immediately, maybe no Quickpwn for the new version available at this time. You can restore to the new version and can use the backup to restore the data (SMS, call history,...) that iTunes does not take care syncing. The only disadvantage: using the restore from a backup option is you'll get the settings from Cydia, Apps etc back aswell.

Usually this should do no harm. In some cases it is not recommended at all: If Apple changes stuff like user model, database structure (SMS, etc) you'd better setup the iPhone as a new iPhone.
