jailbreak a unactivated 3GS on iOS 4.0.1?
Hi, I have a 3GS with iOS 4.0.1 (the phone has a t-mobile lock and was never jailbreaked before) I checked the bootroom - it's an old one - iBoot-359.3 .
I bought an new iPhone 4 and cut my t-mobile SIM to a microSIM - so I can't use the SIM in the 3GS anymore ....
I have found a pwnage Tool (4.0.1) which also creates custom ipws for iOS 4.0.1 - I can create the custome ipws but when I restore the firmware I only get 1600/1604 Errors.... I found some posts that say the 3GS must be jailbroken on an earlier version (like 4.0) - is this the problem why it's not restoring?
I could do the following: create a microSIM to SIM adapter and activate the phone legally, then go to jailbreakme.com, ultrasn0w ......
but I don't want to create that adapter.......
Is there a software solution for that? There was some kind of numpad hack at firmware 1.1.1 times (when u enter *#12345 blabla to get to the contacts and from there to set wifi and open safari) is this still possible?

1) Yes, in order to restore a custom firmware to the 3GS, you must have previously pwned the phone (used redsn0w on 3.1/3.1.2 or used PwnageTool to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2). If this is not done, you cannot restore custom firmware as the device fails the signature check. That said, 1600 and 1604 are usually USB related and in most cases the result of a botched Apple Mobile Device Library installation -- you can fix this by uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes in some cases. Also, at present, Apple is signing 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, but they are not signing previous firmwares -- if you do not have a 3.1.2 SHSH on file, you cannot use that method to jailbreak -- you'll need to use JailbreakMe from the device in order to jailbreak the 4.0.1 running iOS.
2) You can do this if you prefer, but you don't really need to. Alternately, you can buy 5 of the SIM adapters for like $4.95 around at certain places on the net. If you've got an iPhone4 and play around with the SIM cards, it's worth the money. Improperly cutting your SIM and inserting improperly can jam the SIM pins and void your warranty -- no one wants that to happen.
