iPhone 3GS OS 3.12 how not to loose apps bought from Cydia updating to 4.2.1
Hi I have an iPhone 3GS with OS 3.12 and I would like to update to 4.2.1 and unlock it again
but I'm not sure how to backup two apps I bought from Cydia
Do I have to update first from the Apple iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw
loose my jailbreak, pawnage again and then do the unlock?
Why Cydia suggest me to update just to 4.0.1?
I have read iClarified and my iphone should be fine with the 4.2.1 and unlock
what shall I do? I read the forums and could not find an answer
A very confused Katbel
Thanks for a very precious help!

You need a saved SHSH to restore to 4.2.1 (even with pwnagetool)
Cydia keeps track of apps you purchased - however you need to check that the purchased app works on 4.2.1
This won't save any settings or data you added to the purchased app.
To keep your unlock, you absolutely must use pwnagetool custom IPSW to load 4.2.1
If you want to retain your data from 3.1.2 you can take a full sync / backup with iTunes before you restore to 4.2.1
Then after the restore has finished, you can select to "restore from iTunes backup" this will bring back your settings and saved data.
NOte: This can sometimes cause problems - especially poor battery performance.

iPhone 3GS 32GB (4.3.3; Pwnagetool) factory unlocked oldest SHSH 3.1

Long time ago I chose "make my life easier " on Cydia and I can see on the upper side the green list of all SHSH
Is this enough?

Ok, downloaded right now: I found pwnagetool 4.3.3.1, it should work with any ipsw, correct?

If this is the only reason for poor battery, I can skip it, sigh
Thanks for your help!

It should be, but I never trust Cydia's display (it only gets updated every 6-8 weeks) - the actual saving of SHSH happens quite quickly but to keep Cydia's load time fast, they don't report back the status of saved SHSH very often.
I always check with TinyUmbrella.

No.. you need the right version - which was pwnagetool 4.2 for iOS 4.2.1

My recommendation is that you make a backup of 3.1.2 (and then take a backup of the backup).
This way you can test if the "restore from iTunes backup" causes problems on 4.2.1 - some people have no problems.

Ok, saved my shsh with both TinyUmbrella and ishshit
I have pwnagetool 4.2 and I will backup my new backup, thanks Olethros !
Just one more question: I used blackra1n to unlock my 3gs
Following the procedure you suggested do I need to unlock it with what?
Or will it keep its unlocked feature?

Blacksn0w is what you used to unlock - not blackra1n. You risk big problems by continuing to use blacksn0w.
First use custom IPSW to preserve your baseband and restore to
Then install ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock.

Which problems blacksn0w could have caused?
Or do you mean if I update and keep the unlock with blacksn0w?From what I read I would prefer
and your suggestion indicates that too, to use ultrasn0w

Blacksn0w can cause boot-loops and can corrupt baseband
You should switch to ultrasn0w as soon as possible

May I switch even with the current 3.1.2 ?
Should I remove first Blacksn0w and then load ultrasn0w?

I'd recommend you take the opportunity to reload your OS at the same time (it's easier that way)
I have previously posted how to remove blacksn0w and blackra1n's hacktivation - you would then need to replace these with redsn0w's hacktivation and ultrasn0w. This approach requires a good grasp of the command line and you should have OpenSSH (and preferably also MobileTerminal) installed and tested before you start.
