Default iphone 3Gs with baseband 05.15.04

    Good morning my friends,

I have run into 2 iPhone 3G running baseband that were accidentally upgraded.

I own a small repair shop, and I have a collection of IPSWs I compiled using Pwnage Tool.

I have a special IPSW that contains the iPad baseband, that I used many times for these bricked iPhones (3G) that worked perfectly for a long time.

But recently I have tried pushing the IPSW into the iPhones and it results in error 1015, apparently the process stopped on the moment the baseband was to be upgraded. The result is that I have to use iRecovery to put the iPhone back working, and the baseband is not upgraded.

I wonder what I am doing wrong, or, if Apple has somehow upgraded iTunes or the restore process, so to stop us from doing the baseband upgrade.

I will be very thankfull to read your comments, Thanks,

Nothing has changed that I'm aware of. Try re-creating the custom .IPSW with the iPad baseband and see if that works. It's worth remembering that on newer firmwares (4.0+ if I recall correctly), if you're installing a custom baseband (or blocking the baseband update) you will need to use "Pwned DFU" mode and not just DFU mode or restore mode.

I am putting the phone into DFU using Pwnage tool. Is this what you mean? or am I missing something?

What version of iTunes should I have. Is it possible to restore an iPhone 3G using latest 0s 10.7.3 and iTunes 10.5.1?

Pwned DFU and DFU are not the same thing -- Pwned DFU is a somewhat recent addition, I believe they started using/needing it for the iOS 4.x jailbreaks.

iTunes 10.5.x should be fine to restore iOS 5.x. I just realized you said you were using a 3G though, so I do not believe Pwned DFU mode is required. I don't 100% know but I thought you only need Pwned DFU mode for restoring custom firmware on the 3GS/4 (either pre-jailbroken firmware or firmware with the baseband stripped), but I'm seeing people who are needing to use Pwned DFU to restore custom iOS 4.x firmwares on their 3G.

Unfortunately I haven't found anywhere that clearly details what Pwned DFU mode is and isn't used for. I know it's not a direct replacement for DFU, because some things don't work in Pwned DFU mode that work in DFU....

I don't think it will do any harm to put the phone into Pwned DFU mode either with redsn0w/PwnageTool/iReb and attempt to restore, worst case you're just back where you started.
