This is my first post, and I did my best at reading several threads to find an answer that I can understand but wasn't successful. I would greatly appreciate some advice on the best process for jailbreaking, unlocking, backing up, and cleaning my iPhone for resale purposes so I can buy a new one. I am not sure of what is all involved, so please be thorough on all the best practices that I should proceed with.

As of now, my phone is not jailbroken or unlocked. It is a 3gs 4.0.1 and the modem firmware is 05.13.04. Please let me know what other information is needed. Thanks for any help you guys can provide, and I apologize if this has been answered already but I had trouble finding it.

Backup, sync it to your computer with iTunes, then navigate to the correct backup directory on your computer and make a copy of the backup.

jailbreak - jailbreakme.com (you need original SIM) or pwnagetool 4.1.2 (need mac)
unlock - ultrasn0w

I would personally recommend pwnagetool 4.1.2 as this will also wipe the phone.

Thanks for the help. So since I do not have a Mac, should I wait for a newer version of pwnagetool 4.1.2?

There may never be a version of Pwnagetool for windows. If you know anyone with a mac, I would ask them to make you a custom IPSW using pwnagetool and then send it to you.

You can use redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to restore the custom IPSW via your windows machine.

Sn0wbreeze is an unofficial solution for windows that makes custom IPSW - it is not based on the same code as pwnagetool and doesn't always produce the same results as Pwnagetool. Many users have reported problems with sn0wbreeze and for that reason we have never supported or recommended it on this forum.

What exactly is a custom IPSW and how would I go about doing that on a Mac (I do have access to one).
