Default iPhone 3GS 3.1 Jailbreak & Unlock Problem

I've been researching for several days and I've come to the conclusion that this specific version is quite troblesome.

I can't upgrade to 3.1.2 because Apple no longer signs for those.
I can't upgrade to 4.1 because my baseband will be upgraded and I can't unlock.

no Jailbreak method from what I've seen supports this specific version except for Pwnagetool 3.1.4 but I don't have an Apple computer.

Any advise? I'm going overseas so need to unlock this phone.

    Thanks in advance.

    Bootrom: Don't know
Bootrom (99% likely you have old bootrom) - the new bootrom started to appear around the same time as 3.1.2 was released.

It's important you confirm bootrom version. Guide for this is here Bootrom - The iPhone Wiki

    Are you jailbroken at 3.1? Blackra1n RC3 supports 3.1 jailbreak (and I think redsn0w 0.9.2)

If you are (or can be) jailbroken at 3.1 (with blackra1n or redsn0w) and have a friend with a mac (even if you can't physically bring your iPhone to their mac). This procedure might help PwnageTool Tweaks [iPhone Dev Team] - your mac friend needs to have a clue and follow that procedure exactly. All you need to do is ensure your iPhone is pwned and then restore the generated custom IPSW in iTunes 10.x on windows.

I think I'll give blackra1n a try but I'll be sure the check the bootrom version first. I see that the new bootrom will result in a tethered jailbreak right?

Assuming the jailbreak goes well, is there a way to upgrade the IOS and do an unthethered jailbreak and keep the baseband? Perhaps some custom firmware?

Check bootrom first.. then think hard before jailbreaking if it is new bootrom and you don't have a SHSH for 3.1 or 3.1.2

Yes - for old bootrom only, the pwnagetool tweak option I linked to before.
