Default My experience with pwnage tool

iPhone 3G 16GB Black pwned with pwnage 2.1!
    MacBook Pro 17" OSX 10.5.4 2.5GHz 4GB 250GB
    iTunes 7.7

The hour pwnage came out I was eagerly downloading it and backing up the notes in my brand new black 3G iphone 16GB. I first attempted and received several errors with installing the custom firmware on the phone through itunes. and was getting quite discouraged.. I must have restored back to the original firmware at least 4 times. Keep in mind I jailbroke my legit 1st gen iphone starting with firmware 1.0 on up through 1.1.4. So after I read through the comments on the blog and googled and few different topics to see what the solution to the errors were and overcame them.
I finally installed the firmware on the phone by going into /library/iTunes/ and creating a new folder called 'Device Support'. Once the firmware was on the phone I used the advanced options in the pwnage tool to install the custom graphics and activate the phone automatically but not unlock because I am an at&t customer. It loaded the springboard and I was jumping up and down because of the new 'cydia' application that was installed from the jailbreak. Then I wait about around 5 minutes for the phone to get a signal, I just thought first time it takes a minute, I kept waiting and ended up not catching any signal in the clear view of the sky. So I went and re-created a new custom firmware and by this time pwnage tool 2.1 was released and I de-selected activation. Restored with the new firmware and everything works great! I do like the cydia application and I have seen previews for the new installer so we will have all kinds of different applications coming from all different places with the app store, cydia and the installer.

Notes on firmware 2.0 before the jailbreak:
    1. I was the second person in the apple store to activate the iPhone 3G the day it was released. I had a lot of time to get familiar with the stock firmware 2.0 and i noticed a massive amount of lag. Searching through contactsm going back to the springboard, sending/ receiving email.. the list goes on, overall when you compare the stock firmware 2.0 to the new custom firmware 2.0, the amount of lag is exactly the same. I also noticed if you dont' restart the iPhone for days safari will crash more often, I usually restart the phone daily and I haven't had any applications crash to the springboard. The dev-team are outstanding with what they do and I applaud all of the members for getting this tool out so quickly.

    2. When I was not in 3G coverage area I would turn on the 3G in the phone and it would not find a 3G network but the phone would default back to the edge network, which is what I expected. When I was in 3G coverage 3G worked a lot faster than edge which is what I expected. (Wifi is completely turned off during all of this). After pwning the iPhone when you turn on 3G and I am not in a 3G area the phone gives no service in the top left. Edge works fine if 3G is turned off. When I am in a 3G area pwned 3G works great! So this is not a huge deal because of the major waste of battery life and not being able to utilize 3G speeds however it is something different I noticed.

    3. I have several applications installed from cydia and new ones show up everyday.. NES works great and is improved, bossprefs is improved, Macmac I have never seen before, quake was released for firmware 2.0 through cydia. I also have several applications from the app store with apple's texas holdem being my favorite! They all run with no issues.

    4. I have a mobileme account setup and at first none of it worked, now all my email, contacts, and calendars automatically get pushed to mobileme and to my other laptops. On an average day I have email, contacts, calendars automatically push, wifi on, bluetooth on, ssh off, location services off. I text between 30-50 texts a day and I talk a lot less then I text. So I can go to work for ten hours and come home with 50% battery left. I don't use the ipod feature to much so I haven't determined how much that drains the battery. Overall I am very happy with the iPhone and the pwnage tool, I would recommend to everyone!

Dev-Team thank you for your hard work! I was eagerly awaiting the release of the pwnage tool and it made me very, very happy the day I installed and jailbroke my 3G iPhone!

Pwning process was flawless; no problems there. Cydia works great as well. The phone does seem slower than usual, however, that might just be the 2.0 firmware (since I was used to my old and stable 1.1.4 on my first-gen iPhone that's now sold). But no bugs or anything so far.

I'll probably restore to factory and see if it speeds it back up.

I jailbroke my 3G iPhone with no problems using Pwnage 2.0.1. The phone works as before. I neither noticed any glitches nor experienced hang ups. I didn't install anything except SSH but SSH works just fine.

I tried jailbreaking a US iPhone 3G in Spain without the SIM card and couldn't activate it afterwards...

I can only see the GFU screen asking for a valid/unlocked SIM card. I reckon it would activate with an AT&T card, but don't have one here. I have a Movistar (Spain's selected cell-network provider) card though.

How can I activate it to at least be able to use it as an iPod touch until unlocking becomes possible?

I believe it's locked to Rogers which is a part of AT&T in Canada. I've never tried any other SIM card.
