Most 2G iPhones have already been permanently unlocked.

What OS were you running before? Was the iPhone jailbroken before you upgraded to 3.1.2?

Your choices are blackra1n or pwnagetool (make and restore a custom ipsw)

I recommend pwnagetool, less buggy. Blackra1n is faster but you will experience problems with hackactivation that can generally be fixed. It's just more of a hassle to fix these.

I want to update to the latest 3.1.2 but I dont have access to Mac.

I have a 2G on version 3.0 - unlocked using pwnage & directions from iclarified.

Any suggestion?

Due to the rules of this forum, we can't provide links to files containing Apple's copyrighted material. You need to google for a pre-made 3.1.2 ipsw for your iPhone model, make sure the ipsw was made with the activation option checked in pwnage tool.

Because you are already jailbroken you can simply shift-click restore in iTunes and select this custom ipsw to go to 3.1.2

What will I get by upgrading fron 2.1 to 3.1.x ? I have few paid locally developed softwares installed and I have to pay again if I upgrade since owner only install the software and charge each time for installation. Does it really worth upgrading?

It's been such a long time since I modified my phone and I'm not to sure what all the 'rules' were when doing so. I never updated the firmware since unlocking it so I'm now searching for the ipsw file but had a few other questions before upgrading.

My specs...
version: 2.0 (5A347)
Modem Firm: 04.05.04_G
Used pwnage via mac

1. Can I upgrade itunes? I'm still on 7...
2. Is there a way to restore to my current version in case something goes wrong? I'm guessing I could backup the device in itunes?
3. When I upgrade the firmware I'm guessing it wipes the phone, correct?
4. Is there any known issues with 2G phones and 3.1.2? Such as slow response time, freezes, apps that fail, etc...

If you want to run OS 3.x you need to run iTunes 8.2 or higher (the latest iTunes 9.0.2 works fine).
You can restore to your current version.. To prepare for a potential restoration: Use iTunes to take a backup of the iPhone, then manually copying the backup folder out of ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (or zipping it up). Keep a copy of the installer for the version of iTunes you used with OS 2.0
For jailbroken iPhones it is recommended to wipe the phone during the restore. This is because it is not supported to migrate jailbroken apps.
4. 3.1.2 runs fine on a 2G iPhone I have been running it for a while and it generally works ok.

Is it OK for me to accept the 'update to carrier settings for your iPhone' or will it hose the phone? I updated to 3.1.2 and so far it's running much better than the vanilla OS, thank you for the assistance!

Still trying to enable MMS for AT&T...

As long as you are not using tethering (enabled via hacking/patch) it is fine to update carrier settings. They are generally safe to install.
