HELP! No Service/No Carrier issue after jailbreak - Factory unlocked 3G: 3.1.2 :(
Hi All,
1) I bought my factory unlocked iphone with firmware version 3.0.1 installed.
2) I upgraded it to 3.1.2, then I used Pwnage Tool version 3.1.4 to jailbreak the iphone.
3) I'm with a non-official carrier (I live in China, so I use China Mobile), so I made sure the "Activate" option was checked when I made the custom firmware.
4) Cydia is now successfully installed, but I have no phone service. When I check in Settings > General > About, the carrier section states "Not Available".
Can anybody help with suggestions?
Some solutions I have tried that did not work:
- Restore back to factory firmware (3.1.2) - When I tried this and connected it to iTunes, I tunes told me to go see my nearest apple dealer (a tough break for me, because I live in china
) - Reset the network settings and restart - This did nothing
- Turn of 3G and restart - This did nothing
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Factory unlocked iPhones don't need hacktivation. Try restoring with a firmware made with pwnagetool and make sure you do not have the activation box ticked.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried your solution. Created a new firmware with pwnagetool 3.1.4 on my mac. I made sure that the Activation box was unchecked this time.
Unfortunately, iTunes comes back with the dreaded "There is a problem with your iPhone" message. I tried restoring back to the original 3.1.2 firmware and I get the same message.
I've been trying to recover from this forever now with no luck. I tried deleting iTunes and reinstalling it. Creating a new user account. Using another PC and nothing works.
HALP!
----------------------------
On a side note: I realize how I got confused with the Activation vs No Activation option.
According to this link (Jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 3.1.2 Pwnage Tool (Mac) | iPhone) According to step 7: "If You are using an Unofficial service provider (i.e. T-Mobile) then check 'Activate the phone' ". I'm on China Mobile, which isn't an official service provider (i.e. AT&T), so I figured I check the Activation option.
But I guess if you own a factory unlocked iphone, there is no such thing as an unofficial service provider... Is that statement true?

Yes you could say with factory unlocked iPhones there are no unsupported carriers this is definitely true for activation.
I am sorry you are having problems restoring your iPhone now. Hope you work that out.

Re: HELP! No Service/No Carrier issue after jailbreak - Factory unlocked 3G: 3.1.2 :(
It's cool. Thanks for your help/suggestions. Anybody else?
I'm starting to think my iphone isn't actually factory unlocked (even though the model number MB496ZP checks out...)

Anybody other suggestions?
Any other factory unlocked iphone users having problems jailbreaking with 05.11.07 modem firmware?

not at all. I DFU restored my factory unlocked 3G to apple stock 3.1.2, it activated when done. Used Balckra1n then but Pwnagetool is cool and a bit safer ;-)
On the factory unlocked just make sure to first activate them with itunes when using pwnagetool afterwards. No need to care for the baseband version cause the iPhone is factory unlocked.
I used DFU mode to make sure to get rid of all the test stuff I had installed before. i did not restore from backup after applying 3.1.2 btw.

That's good to know...
...so it sounds like I'm doing something wrong on my end when I try to restore to 3.1.2.
Here's what I've been doing. Spot anything that I'm doing wrong?
1. Plug the iPhone into my Mac
2. iTunes 9.0.1 displays the "There is a problem with your iPhone" message on the white screen.
(i.e., http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2039/...a4ada3bd95.jpg without the at&t logo in the upper-right)
3. I open up Pwnage Tool and use the DFU menu to place the iPhone in DFU mode.
4. Pwnage Tool says DFU mode was a success
(here iTunes doesn't instantly recognize my iphone... it displays a small message telling me to unplug/replug the iphone back in)
5. I unplug/replug the iPhone back in via USB and iTunes says my phone is in recovery.
6. I click restore... let iTunes do its thing
Boom.. iPhones displays the "There is a problem with your iPhone" message again...
I also tried doing this from a fresh account and fresh install of itunes but with no luck.
I'll try to find the exact error message my iTunes kicks out in step 4 and post it tonight. it's the only thing "out of the ordinary" that I can think of.
Anyway, spot anything else that I may be doing wrong? Are there any special steps I need to take in DFU mode to make sure I get rid of all the test stuff? (maybe something is remaining left-over from a previous jailbreak attempt?)
Once agian, any help is appreciated.

u are already on 05.11.07 so why use pwnageTool?
did you try to restore to a 3.1.2 (not custom) and check if iTunes activates it (it should do it because you are factory unlocked. then you can jailbreak with blackra1n.

There are many reasons to use PwnageTool even if you are on baseband 05.11.07. Here are two.
- Using PwnageTool is a good habit to start. Blackra1n encourages unsafe updating habits (which will cause a lot of 3GS owners pain when Apple next releases an OS update - 3G owners should have learnt this by now)
- PwnageTool offers a fully functional jailbreak. Blackra1n deliberately leaves out things like YouTube support and ability to browse the filesystem over USB, these things need to be fixed manually after jailbreak.

If all hope fails...(only for jailbroke phones)
Yes there are many ways to reset your phone to get service back but none worked for me. One of the main problems with the no service is due to your phone being jailbroken. Some of the cydia apps (or diffent stores) have bugs in them when you download it. If you are a AT&T person and you download something with T-Mobile or vice versa then it creates the famous NO SERVICE feature we all love. The other one that creates this feature is not sticking to your jailbroke firmware, if you use blacksn0w, blackra1n, limera1n, pwnage t00l, poison, or many other than do not download the others apps. For example, I use Limera1n as my jailbreak and i accidently downloaded ultrasn0w without realizing it and for a day i couldnt fix the no service feature when i tried everything, but when i went through my packages in cydia i saw ultrasn0w and immediately removed it then i didnt have the no service thing. I hope this helped someone out there who was in my shoes
