Red face Go from JB 3.0.1 to JB 3.1.3 on 3GS?

    Hi all,

I have a jailbroken 3GS on 3.0.1, I want to update it to be jailbroken on 3.1.3.

    Info on the phone:

3GS, baseband 4.26.08, IBOOT-359.3, activated on an official carrier (Rogers)
So, I think thats an early baseband and bootrom which allow for untethered jailbreak. Is that right?

I have an OSX VM that I can use to run Pwnagetool 3.1.5 to create the custom IPSW file. The actual update would be done in Windows 7. Some questions:

    1) Cydia has SHSHs on file for this phone for 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2 and 3.1.3. Should I edit my hosts file to point to Sauriks signature server before doing the jailbreak?

    2) In pwnagetool, when it says: Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?, do I select Yes? Some sites claim saying yes here will update the baseband. Is this true?

    3) Because its jailbroken right now, do I need to enter DFU mode to apply the custom firmware (shift-restore) in Windows?

    Thanks for the help.

    Not necessary

You need to say yes to this step. It will NOT update the baseband (if you actually want to update the baseband, I can provide you with instructions for this)

    NO.

You can only use DFU mode for restoring to original apple IPSW where you have a corresponding SHSH (either one currently issued by Apple or from Cydia or locally via The Firmware Umbrella)

Thanks for the help. I definitely don't want the baseband updated.

So, to update it it I dont need to be in DFU mode, but what about recovery mode? Or is it just that I connect the phone to iTunes and shift-restore using the custom firmware?

Also, any harm in upping the size of the root partition? Currently, in 3.0.1 mine is set to 750MB and is about 85% full.

Recovery mode and the mode that iTunes puts the iPhone in when you click restore are the same... You won't have a problem as long as your iPhone is already jailbroken when you shift-click restore.

I have the root partition at the default size and have never had a problem. Cydia moves a lot of files to the Media partition so it really is not such a big deal like it used to be.

    Cool

Thanks for all the help. I used pwnagetool in my OSX virtual machine to create a custom firmware (expert mode, since I changed the root partition to 800MB). I did a shift-restore and picked the custom firmware file, and iTunes restored it.

After the restore and boot of the phone, it did lose its carrier name until a reboot, then said it couldnt detect a sim. I re-seated the sim card and cleaned it out a bit and the next boot was fine ... the phone reported that it was activated, and all worked. I restored from a backup in iTunes and got all my music/pics/apps back. I had made a list of apps from Cydia that were installed and re-installed those. I ran ultrasn0w and unlocked for the heck of it.

Baseband didnt get updated (which is good), it still shows 4.26.08. Since I had a bootrom version that supported an untethered jailbreak, rebooting the phone without a USB connection is fine.

    Thanks for your help.

PS.. afterwards, I realized my misconfiguration in VMWarePlayer and am now able to access the iPhone inside the OSX VM in iTunes ... so I guess I really could have done the whole process inside the VitualMachine.

    Post 3gs jailbreaks with 3.0.1 firmware & 4.26.08

hmnn? i am in a similar position as the above post, if anyone can clarify the following... would be great, as I have lost/bricked/ my original iphone 3gs and have now purchased an early model 3gs: 3.0.1 modem 4.26.08

reading in the community today indicates that for this phone/firmware/baseband:

    best prescription is --->

    pwange better then redsnow
~ a little less user friendly to do, but you get to create a backup file so your baseband is protected if I understand correctly.

    next:
go to cydia and do some backup of shsh files this (what app or method does this?)

    ipsw?
    ?'-) I know i'm sounding newbie...

    tx
