That sounds like the best decision. There is no need to have a beta working now, since it will be superseded in a couple of weeks by the final version. And there is not much in there at this point that will make that much of a difference. Microsoft Exchange is great for those who will use it, and the AppStore will also be great when it's available. Since the latter is not available now, there's not much use in having the icon without any functionality. Of course, the new languages and the search feature will be useful for many, but there were workarounds for that in the current firmware version. I hope that we will be able to continue to use Installer in conjunction with the AppStore and that SummerBoard and other great apps can be used with firmware 2.0. Let's hope that the 3G phone will have some additional goodies - such as a better camera/flash, GPS, etc., but I am not so confident that such will be the case, unfortunately.

maybe the best idea to delay

However we are all assuming the new iphone will launch on the same day as version 2.0 comes out

Thanks for the confirmation, Mitchell. Any idea as to how the AppStore will work? Will the applications be installed into the media partition (I assume so)? And will the applications installed with Installer and those installed with the AppStore be placed in the same /Applications subdirectory? When the AppStore syncs with iTunes, will it wipe out any apps that were not installed with the AppStore? We will see.

if the phone is jailbroken installer will still install to /Applications and iTunes won't even look there, let alone wipe them. yeah, AppStore stuff gets in the media partition in a very similar fashion as webclips do, only their folder is called Applications instead of WebClips

So will this solution work with the full release or is it wait and see?

Thanks, Mitch. Chronic, won't it cause problems if both the AppStore and Installer are adding apps to the /Applications subdirectory? Maybe it will only be an issue if there is an app (or folder under /Applications) created with the same name using both the AppStore and Installer. Of course, that could be fixed by changing the name of the app folder with Installer (or most likely at the repo level). Installer probably will place that app within the Uninstall list if it sees an app with the same /Applications folder as an Installer app. I guess that if the AppStore names the apps folder in a similar fashion in which it names webclips (with seemingly random letters and numbers), then that will not be an issue, either. I'm counting down the days to find out!!
