custom boot or recovery image
I am trying to create a custom boot or recovery image. I know about the necessary setting that are required. I have created my image in photoshop, saved it as for web, png-24. The final file size is 72kb, alpha channel 1, rgb 310X470. Pwnage tool 3.1.4 will not open the image. I have tried copying the Steve image out of pwnage, then modifying the image with my own, but I still get the "not correct png file" error. Does anyone have a tried and true way top make a custom image? I have also tried creating the image in Gimp, but no luck either. The only way I have had any success is to add text to the steve image and then save it. If I try to erase steve and add any more graphics, even though I am well below the 100kb limit, it still fails.
Any ideas?

I had success with both save for web and save as PNG in photoshop. WIth greyscale and rgb images
I would recommend leaving interlaced off (but it does work with it on)
I think the problem is filesize, personally I feel it needs to be less than 32kb for pwnagetool to accept it. This could be a bug in pwnagetool or a change in a newer version of the iPhone OS.

Thanks for the reply. After another 2 hours of messing with the same image, it looks like I can load it at 56Kb but the image size needs to be around 220X320. I finally got it to load.
Now let's see if I can get it done with a second image!

I had an image that was full size and I found I could not get it to load unless I brought the size down dramatically. I tested 64k and that did not work, so i tested 32k and that worked.

(Pwn3.1.4 / OS3.1.2)
Following test:
Boot logo with RGB + alpha channel
1. - 66KB (320x238) worked
2. - 29KB (320x480) worked
3. - 41KB (319x240) worked
it was all the greater, no chance
I worked with Gimp
Can someone tell me why there are always these problems, or why for large PNG file there is an error.

It should actually work to the 100KB.
I believe the 100kb limit is not on the actual PNG but on the final converted and encrypted file that is sent to the iPhone. Depending on how it is converted, that could increase the file size considerably. The encryption adds very little to the file size.

After you have successfully loaded a custom boot logo and generated the custom ipsw. Use a zip tutility to unzip or browse the ipsw
You are looking for two files called applelogo.xxxxxxxx.img3 and recoverymode.xxxxxxxx.img3 the xxxxxxxx bit varies depending your iPhone model.
These files are located under Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.xxxxx.production\ where xxxxx is the model number of your iPhone... eg m68ap for the 2G iPhone.
I just looked at a 3G ipsw and saw that the original recovery mode is 48kb and apple logo is 11kb

If you are playing around with custom boot and recovery images. You might want to check out redsn0w 0.9beta3 [iPhone Dev Team] this includes an option to just flash the NOR files (these are the files under Firmware\all_flash\ mentioned earlier) and will not overwrite your existing data.
I have tested the windows version earlier this month and it worked fine for me. Now it is a public beta and an OS X version is also available.
Remember this is a beta...
