Default Checking a 3G iPhone unlock status whether it is factory unlocked

I bought 3G iphone few months ago with 2.0.2FW preloaded. It's jailbreaked with cydia & installer installed. Its open for any SIM & does not require a 'turbo' SIM.

Through my reading research, the unit was supposedly a factory unlocked model since there's no unlock software available for 3G model yet(at least not yet!)

Question: How to ensure that it is realy an unlocked unit which won't lock back if I upgrade to 2.2FW?

    Any input helps. Thanks.

Compare the part number (Preferences->General->Info) of your iPhone with the ones in the list here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
If the part number matches one of a country where the iPhopnes are sold unlocked, you can just go ahead an upgrade.
If you want just post the part# here, and I'll let you know.

    Thanks volkspost

The PN is MB048LL which is locked to ATT US. Then, to the basic question, how they manage to unlock it in the first place (as if the unlocking software is not available)?

    Pls share. Thanks!!!

Wow! Finally the truths revealed…but not, until proofing by crack open it which I won’t.

Yes, now came to mind why should take risk upgrading it. Any good reason? Has anybody out there that having similar case has successfully upgrade the FW? Pls share.

Actually I had problem when downloading an apps from App Store (via the iphone). The installation stops halfway & exist the App Store unexpectedly. Tried again, same thing came up. Then, the iTunes keeps prompt-up asking to proceed the installation every time I open WiFi - very disturbing. I can’t delete the icon. Further checking into the apps info, it says “if you’re experiencing difficulty in installing it, pls upgrade to 2.1FW”.

That’s how the upgrading idea sparked me. Is there any way I can delete or cancel the installation?

The problem is - without opening - you dont know if and which solution is in there and what would happen if you upgrade - at worst all phone function gone.
You should try the simcloning section here in the forum and post a request in there.

We can never say 100% sure based on only the model number. However, you *should* be okay as I believe all iPhones from Hong Kong are unlocked (your model number indicates the phone was made for sale in Hong Kong)
